Thrifted Maternity clothes?

I've been in my "fat pants" for a couple of weeks now, and it's apparent that I should probably switch to maternity pants. DH and my MIL bought me two pair for X-mas, and I'll probably pick up a couple more over the weekend for typical wear. My problem is, I work in a machine shop, every day I come home soaked with oil, coolant, metal chips, and various other icky things. Maternity clothes are expensive. No way am I going to drop a ton of money on clothes I'll wear for a few months that are going to be mutilated. For some reason, though, the thought of used maternity clothes freaks me out a bit. My mind immediately wanders to horrible thoughts like "what if someone's water broke in these?!" and I get grossed out.

Have any of you bought thrifted maternity clothes, or considered buying them?

another note:There are no maternity clothes stores in my city, any idea where I can pick up some decently priced clothes (Kohl's has been the only place I've shopped so far)

Re: Thrifted Maternity clothes?

  • I picked up a pair of jeans for $2.50 and a top for $1 today.  Definitely go thrifted.  I'm sure things you step in in the street are no worse than a water breaking in a pair of pants.  At least the pants can be washed.

I'll probably hit up Goodwill tomorrow, I've always been sort of thrift-phobic. My washing machine will just get a serious work-out :P

  • Try thredUP ( https://www.thredup.com/r/AUYBOE if you use this link you get $10 towards your first purchase)

I've gotten a few pieces off here and they were all in really good shape and like-new quality. It's basically like an online consignment store and everything is priced really reasonably.
    thanks! :D

  • Target has cute maternity ( just use cash ;) )
  • A lot of people find new with tags Liz Lange for target clothes at goodwill. The rumor is that target sells overstock to goodwill.

  • I hit up my local thrift stores for most of my maternity wardrobe. There's nothing on those clothes that a trip through my washer can't scrub out. :)

  • My goodwill always has new Target stuff all over the store - shoes, furniture, clothes.
I agree with thrifting. I picked up 7 pairs of Motherhood Maternity pants for $3 each at my local store!

  • I'm all for goodwill and other consignment shops. If I can avoid paying full price for items I will only wear for a couple months then that will make me one happy girl! Just make sure you run them through a good wash and check them out thoroughly before buying them.

  • Old Navy definitely has some good stuff and when you hit a sale it's awesome! I also found some good black work pants second-hand at Savers and paid $4 each!! Wash in hot water and dry on high and they are good as new.
  • Thrift or die is how I roll maternity wear or not. If it really freaks you put a little baking soda in the wash for the first time to get out any residue.
  • I mainly shop at thrift stores for everything, due to budget. There's nothing wrong with used clothes and items - the last couple of bras I bought were from Salvation Army.

Target does sell overstock to Salvation Army, so they jack the prices up on those items. It's not worth it in my area.

I've found a few maternity pieces, but nothing special. You need to check the regular racks for shirts, our thrifts always mix them in because they never bother to look at tags.

Also check Craigslist, garage sales and local FB swap groups for items.

  • Almost all my stuff has come from good will or the volunteers of America thrift shop. Two pair of jeans were new, I paid 1.99 each for them.
  • Oh I have no problem with used maternity clothes.

I have bought some pieces from online friends & from our local parent list serve.

  • I buy most of my maternity clothes at Goodwill or they were given to me from a friend or relative.

Target has a maternity line. Old Navy has a maternity line. Gap has a maternity line.
On black Friday I bought up a lot of maternity clothes at old navy. They've got comfy stuff at a comfy price.

I'll have to settle for Goodwill and Target, we don't have an Old Navy or Gap. >___<

  • I got a bunch of maternity clothes from thrift shops.
Can you wear scrub bottoms to work?
  • It doesn't gross me out. I bought a pair of capris $5.  Look at the price tags of new long enough and thrifted will look better lol

I say buy some of each and the thrifted will help round out your attire.

  • Old navy does free returns so you can order online :) I don't see anything wrong with thrift stores, I just don't have the patience for it!
