EBF moms: any experience with RSV?

My 7 week old DS2 was diagnosed with rsv yesterday. No bronchiolitis, so no need for breathing treatments or hospitalization so far. I can't get anything out when I suction his nose. I think it is all draining into his stomach. He has gagged up some snot a couple of times. He is starting to fuss at the breast and only nurse for about 6-8 minutes. He's not emptying one breast.

When we got the diagnosis, I decided to start pumping and bottle feed so it was less work for him to eat. He hates the bottle (which we need to work on anyway, because I will go back to work in three weeks) and he only drinks an ounce from it. He seems satisfied after and will doze off to sleep. Sometimes, he wakes back up about thirty minutes later and I will let him nurse. He's not acting hungry, but I can tell he's not taking in as much.

He is still pooping pretty regularly, but his wet diapers have decreased. I'm staying in touch with his ped via text. But I was wondering if anyone else had experience with rsv while EBF. DS1 got a bad cold (not rsv) when he was 9 weeks old, but I had already introduced formula at that point. I remember him eating less, but it was more than an ounce.

I know formula and breast milk are different, so I'm looking for some insight and/or advice. Should I try a syringe? Should I go back to strictly nursing? Is an ounce enough if he's somewhat cluster feeding? I'm sleep deprived from sitting up watching him breathe at night, so my brain is not fully functioning. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: EBF moms: any experience with RSV?

  • My son had a cold at 5 weeks. He usually does not even spit up a little bit but he was having similar problems to what you described. He usually takes each breast for about 10 minutes but was only taking 1 for 4 or 5 minutes at a time and then gagging and projectile vomiting his milk. I kept with the EBF because he will not take a bottle from me at all and I was home alone most of the time. I offered the breast every hour. It took about 5 days but then it passed. Good luck, hope LO recovers quickly.
