Intro Recap and Metformin Q

I think I introduced myself before but I haven't posted in a while so a little back-story... I have PCOS and conceived my daughter (now 21 months) via clomid, stim shot (can't remember what it was called) and IUI.  Shortly after we starting TTC, I was diagnosed with PCOS and we were referred to the fertility specialist.  We jumped right to IUI the first time around because DH had lower motility.  It worked on the first try. Now, DH and I want to try for baby #2.

We are saving for IUI and would like to do it in September.  I am going to call my fertility doctor this coming summer to get things started for the IUI.  I thought, in the meantime, we could try some TI.  My obgyn gave me a script for metformin which I had filled today.  I was going to start my first dose tonight.  I thought I would try the metformin for a few months, if I don't get preg, I was debating about asking my obgyn if i could take metformin and clomid (I read they work well together for PCOS).  Will my obgyn monitor me on clomid like the fertility specialist did or should I just call my fertility doc sooner and get started with him?

  • Welcome back.

It's a total crap shoot whether or not the OB will monitor you, so I'd try to get in with the RE.

    Good luck.

  • Are you new to metformin?  If you are, brace yourself.  It may make you sick for a while, but you will adjust!  The first dose I took, I was so sick I didn't think I would be able to continue it.  Now, I can take the full amount no problem.

Good luck and don't plan on going out in public the first night you're on it. ;)

  • I too suffer from PCOS and tried Metformin and Clomid with no result. I didn't see your age, but I am 39 - all women and all TTC stories are different and have different outcomes. I sincerely wish you the best.

However, IF I could do it all over again, I would go straight to the RE and skip the OBGYN. The RE will be (should be) much more thorough and will actually monitor you so you can take advantage of each precious cycle. And IF I knew better and could do it all over again, I would have my AMH and FSH (and all my fertility levels) checked on my first CD3 with my RE to have a better idea of what I was dealing with 1 1/2 years ago. I've gone through almost 2 years of TTC with no luck only to find out in the last 4 months that my AMH and FSH were not conducive to getting pregnant - it's devastating. I was disappointed that my OBGYN and the first RE I went to didn't conduct any of these tests. That alone could have saved me enormous amounts of emotional turmoil, money, and stress on my marriage.

I encourage you to become as informed as possible and to be your most diligent and most assertive advocate.

Much baby dust and best wishes for a positive outcome.

    +1
Metformin is a beast. It took me several weeks to increase my dosage and 2 months to get to the full dose. Everyone is different but in general it makes your stomach a mess.
