Downhill skiing...yay or nay?

My doctor said it is up to me for the next month and after that she would recommend not doing it. I will definitely listen to her advice and not do it after 24ish weeks. But I don't know what the consensus is on safety of skiing before getting too big.

Re: Downhill skiing...yay or nay?

  • I dont ski but I ride horses.  I am not riding at all while pregnant.  I personally would not ski either just in case you have a bad fall.  But I have only been skiing once when I was young and hated it so that is just my opinion.  I would be too afraid of falling.

  • I ride (snowboard), not ski and no way would I go and do it! If you have a bad spill, it could be very bad for the baby. Remember there's also some people that get out of control and can run into you too. We are going on a trip at the end of February and I'm staying off the mountain and just relaxing.

  • Skiing is also my passion, but I've decided to pass this year, despite those tempting snow capped mountains waving at me everyday. I would just feel soo awful if something happened to the baby that could have been easily prevented.

Last time I went snowboarding I had a bad fall and dislocated my shoulder. That would be a "no" for me.

  • I was just over on 2nd tri board and someone was asking about skiing also

not sure if that will work but here are some other posts.  If not go to 2nd tri and you can see others who commented.

  • i gave up surfing when i got to the 2nd tri.  when you fall surfing you fall into water not packed snow or ice.  i would just say be careful and stick to easier runs or just give it up this year.

  • I'm not this winter, cause I'm supposed to slow down, but I would if not on restriction. Honestly, it's all about how comfortable you would feel. If your just going to stress and not enjoy, skip it. Also, don't push yourself and remember, it is an active sport - rest and drink water.
  • I wouldn't, why risk it? There will always be next year...

  • I ski and ride horses. I wouldn't ski while pregnant. I am still riding my horse, but not other horses.
  • I don't ski or ride horses but I would not do either while pregnant.
  • My dr said this is a big no no at my very first appointment so I definitely wouldn't chance it. Although SIL suggested the entire family go skiing on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve- apparently she forgot I'm 17 weeks pregnant. When reminded I can't ski she lovingly suggested I could hang out at the bar while they all skied. Wouldn't that be fun?!
  • I definitely wouldn't - you can control yourself but not other people.

  • I look at activity this way: even if it won't hurt baby, I don't want to do anything that has a high risk of injury for ME. If injured, I can't take good pain meds and any treatment or surgery becomes way more complicated.

I would love to be running, but it's icy out here and I usually have a few falls in winter. I don't want a sprained ankle or broken wrist while pregnant, so I'm hitting the gym instead.

  • I probably wouldn't go skiing either .. Avoid any activity where you might fall.

What about bowling? That should be fine with a light ball, right?

  • Yeah, I'm headed to a ski mountain with friends for NYE. Planning on getting a massage and just reading some books myself. I know not skiing is going to be torture, but I don't want to risk it.
  • A group of us are heading up to Mt Baker for New Years, I made the call pretty early on not to hit the slopes. It's just not worth the risk for me. I've got a gingerbread house to decorate instead :)

  • DH and I just took his kids up this weekend and, while painful for me to just watch, I passed.. One of the lesson instructors asked me why I wasn't out there (not showing yet) and when I told him I was pregnant he went on to tell me how his professional skier daughter skied into her 8th month.. I guess to each their own - I personally couldn't take the chance.

    I definitely wouldn't chance skiing.

I actually went bowling just the other night. I was fine. Just listen to your body. But I don't usually bowl well... I'm more of a thrower than a bowler, or sometimes a roller. :)
  • I'm a snowboarder and I'm not going at all this season, too risky, why risk a nasty fall and hurt my child for one day on the slopes?
