Used crib?

So I know that in my Baby Bargains book, it says not to get a used crib, and my understanding is that its mostly because of the possibility of recalls, or being so old its not up to safety standards, right?  Well, my sister just offered me the crib she used for her boys.  They bought it brand new in 2000 for their oldest son, and also used it for one of their twins in 2002.  She is going to check out the model and everything and make sure there are no recalls on it, and we would buy a new mattress.  What do you think?  Assuming there are no recalls on it, is there anything I'm missing and some reason we shouldn't use it?  I'm really tempted to not have the expense of a new crib, but obviously I don't want to compromise on safety.

    I would absolutely do it.  Even if you bought one off ebay or craigslist you can research the recalls...etc.

    If it's in good condition and hasn't been recalled, of course you should use it!  Baby Bargains is misleading in that what they really mean for the most part is not to use the crib that your mom has packed in the attic from when you were born.  I got a 6 year old crib from a friend, checked the model for recalls, and put it together using the original instructions and it is working great.

    Thanks ladies.  I was pretty sure it would be a good thing to do, just needed some reassurance I guess!  I think I'm going to e-mail my sister and tell her we want it.  One more big thing taken care of.  Yes!

    Check the recalls and do a thorough visual inspection of the crib to make sure there aren't any cracks in the legs or side rails or anything.
    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
