Playroom

All this toy box talk has got me thinking... So I'm about ready to convert my living room/family room into a play space for my LO and my SIL gave me the side eye saying that our house looks like a daycare and we should convert our finished basement into a playroom for O. Right now the basement is a gym/guest room but there is no bathroom down there and I hate the thought of having to hide in the basement all day when we're home with O just to have our house look presentable when the rare guest comes over.

I guess my question is where do you camp out with your kids and do you mind your house being taken over with toys or do you have a designated play space?

• We have a separate living room and playroom (no basement though). The playroom is directly off the kitchen and I can see what the kids are up to from there. The living room is on the other side of the kitchen wall (MH wants to take down said wall someday...ha, we shall see) Our playroom is usually a disaster and not at all hidden from company. I do need to organize a bit better once we clean up from Christmas. I don't really think anyone minds when they come over, though. Nor do I ;) We spend most of our time in there until R goes to bed, then M usually grabs a couple of books and we head into the living room where the better TV is.

• We have separate living and family rooms. I am turning the living room into DD's play room. It currently only has some book cases in it, not being used for much, so it makes sense. My best friend has a 1.5 year old and they use their basement (buts it's nice and bright, is a walkout to to the backyard) and tried to convince me to do the same, Our basement is gross and I don't want to be stuck down there all the time. I'm not using our family room because with he tv, floor lamp, and all the other crap in that room it would be a lot of work baby proofing where the living room is a blank slate and I won't worry about leaving her in there while I'm in another room.

• Right now all his stuff is in the living room. We have space upstairs to make his playroom but that would be so inconvenient for me until he is old enough to play alone and by then I will probably want another LO. In the next couple weeks we are going to convert our formal dinning room which is open to the kitchen and right as you walk in the front door to LO's play room. It won't be hidden from guest but at least we will have our living room back somewhat.

• My living room looks like a daycare and I don't care at all. Everyone who comes over knows I'm a mom and some are moms with children similar in age so they play with her toys. We're moving to a house in two weeks and since she has way more stuff we will store most of it in her room but the jumparoo and some heavily used stuff will be in the living room. That's where we spend most of our time so it makes sense. It will different once she's old enough to play unsupervised

• I'm okay with it looking like there is a baby living here, to an extent. I have a bunch of those fabric bins and sorted her toys into the bins and keep them downstairs. Every few days I switch out the bin for a new one. This way the living room stays somewhat tidy, she always has new toys to play with, and the toys don't get buried under a bunch of other toys in a toy box and get forgotten about.
• We rent out our basement and even if we didn't, I'd rather have her stuff up here. We have a small house so everything will have to be in the living room. We have a baby now, if people don't want to be reminded of that, don't come over. The only time I will care is when we sell the house.
• We don't use our formal dining room so that is the playroom. We can bring the toys to the family room and easily put them away. When the kids are older they will go upstairs to the gameroom but when they are little we want them close by.
• My nephew's have a playroom, but as it turns out, their toys travel. Who knew?! They like to be where the people are, so their toys get carried into the kitchen, living room, etc. Perhaps it's a matter of discipline to keep them in their playroom. As for my DH and me, we don't have space for a playroom. Hopefully, our son will share our dislike for clutter and just be clean. It works like that, right? ;)
• @nix55 I just got this for LO we won't set it up till he's more mobile. I think it looks good with everything contained.

• Right now we only have the living room as an option. He still doesn't have a ton of stuff, but it's enough to clutter up the living room. When we move in a couple of months, we will have a more open-concept house with a living room and den adjacent to it. I would like to keep most of his stuff in his room, but the den could be a playroom option that I can still see from the kitchen, living room and dining room.
• DS is 4.5 years old and he still does not like to play alone in our basement playroom. Most of our toys are down there, but he still brings things into our family room. Our new house has a front room/living room that we haven't furnished yet. It is just an open space for traveling toys. Clutter makes me stabby, but as long as things are picked up, I don't care.

I don't have a ton of toys in either kids' rooms. Maybe when they get older?

• @subliminalrabbit it's the layout of our house. He has toys all over. We have 3 floors and our main floor has a kitchen/living/dining room combo right when you walk in. We have his car seat (and winter gear) on the chairs in the dining room (right next to his highchair) and then his swing, jumparoo, anywhere chair about 10 feet away. I'm sure once he's in his convertible car seat it won't look that bad. It is what it is. Oh well!

• Most of E's toys are in the nursery and we'll take some out if we're playing in the living room, where we have his swing and Jumparoo. Santa brought him a big new mat that rolls up and we put it down when we're playing on the floor in there.

Is there a reason not to keep LO's toys in his or her own room?

@subliminalrabbit -- What mat did you get? I have been thinking of getting one. We have hardwood and right now we just put a blanket down.
• @subliminalrabbit, no psychological reason behind it. Most of his toys are in his room and we do play in there during the day (sometimes). Just the thought of bringing toys downstairs every day to the main level doesn't seem like a long term solution. I will most likely do this once DH and I are both back at work in March, but until then it seems silly because we're home. I can't even think about what our house will look like once the baby gates go up!

• @BC&LM, this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DLTYL20/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was E's gift from "Santa" and it's SO cozy I could fall asleep on it. But it has a weird crease in it from being rolled up in storage I think, so I may end up trying to get it replaced.

Thanks!
