Babies on the Brain

A little confused and frustrated **also posted on the 1st trimester board**

Hi Ladies,

I really just needed a place to vent/possibly see if anyone is going through what I am.

My typical cycle is anywhere from 25 - 29 days, usually resting in the earlier part around 25 - 27 days. Last months period came at 31 days, which was slightly unusual for me, but not unexplainable. I had just gone on my honeymoon in October to Cuba (was married September 2012). While there I had gotten my period, as expected (horrible timing!), but I also got terribly sick with a throat infection (luckily met a nurse who took care of me and we still had an amazing time!). So, because of the travel and the sickness, my period was slightly later than it normally is. That didn't really throw me off, I was expecting it a little bit.

Please keep in mind, that my husband and I are not trying to conceive, but we weren't using protection -- just the withdrawal method. We weren't trying, but we weren't really preventing. If it happened, it happened. Also, I have been making efforts to make myself healthy recently. I am quite overweight, and have lost just shy of 50lbs since July -- slow and steady! So I really don't think the weight loss should affect my cycle much, seeing as it's been 5 months, and a large chunk of that weight loss was right at the beginning (almost half of it) and my cycle wasn't affected then. I have ALWAYS had a quite regular cycle.

My last period was on November 12th and finished November 16th (which is typical). It was a completely normal period (besides being a couple days past my normal cycle time). I was expecting my period this month around December 10th. It didn't show up, but I didn't think much of it, considering that the previous period was slightly late. Day 32 and still nothing. A little concerned, but not too much. Day 35, starting to get pretty concerned and decide to do a test and it was negative. I figure it might be too early, and the test was one that wasn't necessarily kept at room temp (older test from previous pregnancy "scare").

So I go to the dollar store, purchase a few more tests, and decide to wait until this weekend. Today is day 40. Still no period. I am having some strange symptoms that I don't normally associate with my period -- sore back, slight nausea, increased urination, some small dizzy spells, and a ridiculous amount of gas (mostly burping). Took a test this morning (with first morning urine) and still negative. I took another test just to be sure the first wasn't defective (from the dollar store -- was a little skeptical) and that was negative as well.

I know it could be too early, since I am technically nine days late. But I'm just confused and frustrated because I have never in my life been this late. I know that stress can delay/cause you to miss a period, but there honestly isn't anything that I can think of that would have stressed me out like that. I've been in WAY more stressful times in my life and have never missed a beat with my cycle.

Is anyone experiencing something similar to myself?

  • Do you track ovulation? If not, there is really no way to know if you are actually late. General rule, is to test once a week until 60 days and then call your doctor to jump start your period. (I'm assuming you meant 2013 and not 2012.)

  • My natural cycle not on bc is about 35 days. One time (three years ago) I went 6 weeks without a period. I have no idea what that was about. It could just be a random fluke in your cycle like mine. I'm not sure how long you should go before seeing a doctor.
  • I do not track ovulation. I know basic signs, based on discharge, but other than that, I don't track. And yes, I did mean 2013 haha. It's just frustrating after having such a regular cycle, and now nothing for no reasonably explainable reason.
  • Weight loss can throw things off. Wait it out.

  • I had 30 day cycles for 14 years. Six years ago I started having longer cycles and haven't stopped since. Your body can change in adulthood without warning. Maybe you'll have one fluke cycle or maybe 44 days will become your new norm--it's too soon to tell. Keep taking tests until af comes, you get a bfp or you hit 60 days with no af in which case you should call your ob.

  • I would wait it out. Weight can affect your cycle. When I went off the pill back in college (initially I took it just for the acne prevention since I wouldn't do Acutane) I lost a ton of weight while very sick and it took me 3 months to have my period. The second period never showed after 3 months so I went back on the pill to try to get regular. However, my weight loss resulted in my being temporarily underweight, but any weight fluctuation can cause period irregularities. Our bodies have a preferred weight range that it is used to, and if you drastically drop below that it thinks you are starving and your body stops having periods so you don't get pregnant while in a "starvation" time. For me back then, I knew I couldn't possibly be pregnant, but since you still have that possibility keep tracking so if you do have a bun in the oven you can start ensuring a proper diet, supplements ect for your baby.
  • My period completely changed after having my DD.  I went from 30 days on average to 38-40 days on average.  Plus, usually in August or September my body likes to skip a cycle. (No clue as to why) Your body does strange things!  I would try waiting it out for another week.  If you are having weird symptoms take a test, and if you hit 60 days without a period, you should contact the doctor's office.  Best of luck.
  • Everyone is regular until they are not.

  • Hi! Were you on the pill prior to this? When I went off the pill earlier this year my cycle got completely screwed up and it has now been determined I'm not ovulating. I had very similar symptoms as you around the time I was suppose to get a period but nothing ever came. I took so many tests lol... My boyfriend and I were also doing the withdrawal method.
