Pacifier mix up

I'll try my best not to make this a dear diary but felt I had to share my anguish! We were at a family party with just close family and my 2 year old nephew has been dying to hold LO since she was born. Well tonight I gave in and had him wash his hands and then sit on FIL lap and they held LO together. Well I happened to look over at them just as FIL was sticking my nephews paci in LOs mouth. I screamed out that's not her binky and he immediatly took it from LO. SIL assured me that my nephew wasn't sick but I'm still freaking out! The best part of the whole story is that my DH, who is just beginning to understand BF and the benefits of immunities, tells me that I should put the paci in my mouth too so I get the germs too! Lord help me!

Re: Pacifier mix up

  • She will be fine, germs are a part of life, our puppy has stolen LOs binky many times and he's fine.

  • Lol!! Your husbands response is hilarious. Men's thought processes really humor me. Lo should be ok.
  • Realistically that's really gross. I wouldn't panic about LO getting sick because germs will inevitably spread, but its gross.

  • I can say it's a minor overreaction, but I probably would of done the same. I am a nut about who holds our little guy. I'm SO afraid he's going to get sick and I use every precaution to ensure that he won't. I'm a bit of a nut, but my family and friends already know that about me lol. So they expect it and know it's nothing personal, just who I am.
    Anniversary
  • Let me clarify, it was not an angry scream, I was across the room and both SIL and I noticed at the same time and were like whoa whoa whoa that's not hers. I was not upset at all it was an honest mistake, just really gross!

I've actually read that it's benifical for a mom to clean a paci with her mouth to help build the immune system. Wish I could find the article to link. But agree with pp way overreacted.

    Yeah I have done it.
I do it all the time

  • Lol @ your husbands reaction!!! But, ya, no biggie, if this was your second kid your LO would be around germs from the older kid all the time. You can only protect them so much, eventually it's out of your hands
  • Ya I say you freaked out a bit much.

I've heard the opposite.  Our pediatrician specifically told us not to do this in order to avoid introducing the germs that cause dental decay to her mouth.  (I'm otherwise not someone who cares - I pick up food off the floor and eat it, for example, and wouldn't freak if my kid did the same.)

... I can't even begin to fathom why you freaked out about this. There are a hell of a lot more concerning things to worry about that would affect your LO.

Again, as I posted in a follow up, I did not freak out, both SIL and I who were across the room, saw that it happened and were like whoa whoa whoa that's not her binky. I did not scream at FIL out of anger or curse him out or anything remotely close, but I also did not walk away with someone else's binky in her mouth. My use of the phrase scream was because we were across the room. I shared this because it was a funny story. I was a little worried she might get sick because my nephew has chronic daycare cold but if it happens it happens.
  • I would have reacted in the same way as well.  LO hasn't had his vaccines yet and most of the time they get sick from other kids.

Also I do put his pacifier in my mouth but only because he wont take it dry and you don't really care when they are screaming their head off in public

Our DD has stolen LO's paci and put it in her mouth on numerous occasions and then shoved it in his mouth when I remind her it's his. Did it bother me at first, yeah a little but then I figured it's going to happen.  Kids share germs all.the.time.  I also put LO's paci in my mouth to clean it off.  Did it with DD as well and she's fine.

You don't vaccinate for colds, and vaccine-preventable illnesses are most commonly contracted from parents, not other kids. If OP's relatives brought a kid with pertussis or chicken pox to family Christmas you can bet your ass there would be something to freak out about, but this is ridiculous. The kid was healthy and it was an honest mistake.

    THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was just about hyperventilating over here reading these replies.  Kids don't "inherit" bad teeth from a parent.  The parents (or caregivers) pass the bad bacteria in their mouth onto LO by sharing utensils, the pacifier thing, etc.  Babies are NOT born with the bacteria that causes tooth decay.
  • So, people who don't clean the paci with your mouths... What do you do when LO spits it out and it gets couch fuzz on it? I'm curious to hear the alternative to me sucking the fuzz off. It seems like the natural, easiest thing to do.

...I pick or rub off the worst of the hair and stick it back in?  (If it were truly icky, I'd rinse it off in the sink or a glass of water or something - but we don't take it outside yet, so it's not been an issue.)

  • Lol at OP, the amount of times DD2's bink has been in one of my other kids mouths is probably up in the hundreds. As for dropped binks I'll rinse it or go at it with a wipe... or just try to pick the hair off and give it back.
