Babies on the Brain

Traveling with a baby

My family is planning a big trip for Christmas 2015. I know that sounds ridiculous but you can never start planning too early I guess. Anyway, my husband and I are planning on TTC later on this next year (August or December 2014) which means that the baby would be born in either May or September or somewhere in between there. My question is, would you rather travel with a 3 month old or a 7 month old?

Re: Traveling with a baby

  • This is such a bizarre question. How could you possibly know when you will actually get pregnant? It can take healthy couples up to a year to conceive.  You do realize this is two years in advance and unless you can see into the future, isn't this a little (or a lot) premature?

And FWIW, I've traveled with a 3 month old and a 7 month old - same child - I don't think it matters.

It kind of depends on what you mean by "travel"...there's a difference between flying cross-country to visit friends/family and taking a big extended vacation overseas with a baby in tow. Not to mention (as PPs have said) you don't know how long it will take you to conceive. There are no guarantees and there are way too many variables this far out in advance.

If you do book a trip, maybe look into getting insurance on it. For example, if you are taking a cruise and happen to get pregnant later than you planned you may have to cancel. Cruise lines have a cut-off (24 weeks, I believe) for pregnant women and will not waver on it at all.

  • Whoa, I consider myself a planner but even I think this is intense. If you try to plan every detail of TTC/pregnancy you'll drive yourself crazy. If this is your situation in a few years, you'll make it work either way.

  • We travel all the time with our kid. She has been to multiple states, three countries, and on several cruises. I never understand the "you can't travel once you have kids" mentality. Book the trip and stop stressing what ifs.

  • Way too many variables here - how long it will take to conceive, rather the baby is healthy, the baby's temperament at 4 or 7 months.

If you knew for sure you could get pregnant the first month trying, I would prefer a 7 month old to a 4 month old on a trip. They are more fun/interactive, less diaper changes, and you will have most likely established a better schedule. 4 months wouldn't be bad though. I would also be concerned about cold and flu viruses in hotels and public places with a very young baby. 4 months would probably be fine though.

2 years is a loooooong time. Don't waste time thinking about it now.
