Belly Button Freakout

edited December 2013 in June 2014 Moms
I have a new development and it is throwing me for a loop- I'm a FTM, 15 weeks pregnant and the past 2 evenings my belly button has been protruding. As in, it doesn't look like MY belly button and is taking a new shape due to my growing waistline. And like most, I look more pregnant at the end if the day and my stomach is more bulge-y...hence why this is an evening occurrence.

I am fully aware that this is normal and part of developing a bump but it is causing a minor freak out for me. It is a visible, noticable change for me that is just throwing me off. My mom keeps telling me: " This is normal. What did you think would happen? Just you wait- you have a lot of changes coming your way." Etc.

Thing is- I get it. I knew this would happen, my body would change and my belly button is only going to look more foreign in the coming months as my belly expands. And please understand I (and my hubs) are SO completely overjoyed and happy about this pregnancy. This belly button issue is just weirding me out.

I feel like if someone just looked at me and said: "You're right, your belly button does look different." it would make me feel better. I feel like my weird meltdown is just me maybe adjusting to all these crazy changes?

Can anyone else relate??

Re: Belly Button Freakout

  • I can totally relate I am 17w5d & am really starting to look pregnant. I walk past the mirror and am always caught off guard.

I am not sure why, but it is weirding me out. I know everyone's body is different & every pregnancy is different, but I feel like I shouldn't look this pregnant yet.

  • I am just starting to look pregnant all day now (as opposed to only getting a bump/blump at night) and it is so weird to catch myself in the mirror when I get out of the shower because I'm just not used to seeing my body look the way it does, now. I also feel like my boobs grew two sizes overnight and it is seriously noticeable, but I am not really loving that change since they're just heavy and annoying.

  • I feel your pain! I'm 17 weeks today and just can't get used to seeing a bump sticking out where the abs that I had worked so hard for used to be! LOL I noticed my belly button was very painful a few weeks back, and the cut little belly button I used to have has started to stretch and appears to have become 'un-knotted' inside if that makes sense? My friends tell me that I'll probably end up with an "outtie" in the next few weeks but I guess time will tell :-)
  • I know it's normal too, but I am dreading that happening to me. I even get freaked out when I see it happen to people I know. An innie becoming an outie is just weird and gross to me. I completely get where you're coming from.

Totally agree. This is going to sound weird, but I have an oddly deep innie bellybutton so I'm just praying it somehow won't go outtie because of that, lol!

  • I was so freaked out about my belly button the first time too. Even though I was told it would go back to normal I was so scared that it wouldn't. Mine is pierced at the hole looked all weird, and my innie became a half innie half outie. Weird!! But very shortly post partum it was back to my normal belly button.

  • I just taped my belly button back down when I was pregnant...but it didn't turn into an outie until much later with both of my pregnancies. Band aids work best. :)

I have a really deep innie too and it hasn't popped with either of my two previous pregnancies!

With my first two I don't remember my belly button changing so soon. I just told DH last week I couldn't believe it was already changing! I'm the same I walk by a mirror and can't believe how fast everything is changing this pregnancy. It's perfectly normal to be "weirded out" about the changes your body is going through especially with your first pregnancy. I mean look at me it's my third and I'm still finding things strange :)

Edit for stupid auto correct on my phone

I noticed my belly button is stretching tighter width wise last night, I feel your pain because at the end of the day I'm way bigger. It didn't help matters when after taking Christmas pictures with my Mom and SIL Mom said, Wow you look big and pregnant!

Thanks Mom appreciate that.... not o much.

  • All the changes weird me out too. Even though they're expected, and very much wanted, it's still weird and freaks me out!

And I HATE people pointing them out to me. I'm not a self conscious person, but dear lord, pregnancy changes has made me one. I hate when people stare at the bump or when they ask if I'm getting stretch marks (whp does that?!)

I would just like to vacation to a private island for the next six months or so and be left alone. That would be wonderful!

^^LOL, this! I had a coworker that I kinda-sorta know but don't talk to often just blatantly stare at me today and so I said something like, "My husband and I are expecting a baby in June" and she says, "Oh, yeah... I could tell you were looking a lot bigger!" Well, gee, thanks lady. *eyeroll*

Yes! Me too! I can get my finger in there to the first joint, and I'm hoping this keeps it from going full-on outie. We are belly button twins! :)

  • My belly button did the opposite my last pregnancy, it stayed deep in there and made my belly look so weird...like I had a hole in it. I kinda hope it at least evens out this time around.
  • I can't relate to this exactly but I will say that I had emergency abdominal surgery my last pregnancy and they cut me open sternum to pelvic bone...right through my belly button. It was unexpected and I was in shock to wake up and see all the staples. Then when they were removed I was in shock that I no longer have a belly button. Well, I do...but it's more like two of them and looks nothing like a belly button. Point is, changes, especially sudden ones, can be jarring when it comes to things you are used to. You'll get over it soon enough :-)

  • I am SO relieved to hear some feel the same way!! It's not like I haven't known I've been pregnant for a while but seeing it sort of happen is kind of wild! Thanks for making me feel better- I also smiled reading your experiences/stories!

Mine is more of a "hole" too! You can even see it though my sweater.. like there is a dent. Oh well.

    Yes!!! So weird.
  • Almost 18 weeks and mines starting to pop out! You can see it thru thinner tops... totally considering tapeing it hehe :)

I also still have a hole from where I had my belly button pierced in my younger years. I'm a little freaked out that it might stretch as my belly grows o_O
  • My belly button won't ever be the same after my first pregnancy. I had it pierced and it was all cute! The piercing hole got stretched and never went back to looking the same :-/

This! I am so unimpressed with 16 year old me right now.

I agree...loved it at the time..may regret it now.  I took it out years ago thinking it would help, but those holes are still there.

  • I put it back in after my first pregnancy because honestly it looked better with it in than with it out :-/
  • Not sure why it posted twice but that's after 2nd baby. I'm actually scared for after this time
  • My belly button is freaking me out too. It has been flat since about 10 weeks (which didn't happen till like 30 weeks with my first) and is currently a visible bump through my shirt. And when I poke it feels like a wierd tiny water bed. To make things better it has a lovely blonde mustache now and a super weird stretched out spot with a hole from my belly button piercing when I was eighteen. I'm on board with you. My pregnancy belly button is weird.
  • I freaked out more over the dark line you get down the middle of your belly. Mine were always crooked! All three pregnancies! I expect it will do the same with this one too.
