Having a job that involves heavy lifting...

So to preface, in my before preggo life I lifted heavy 5 times a week in a body part split lifting routine so lifting heavy has never been an issue and indeed I love it. Until I got pregnant. Now I have seen the Crossfit article, etc but I am a high risk pregnancy due to Lupus/hypo so I cut down on lifting to 3 days at most total body and high rep/low weight. And recently I've barely been able to do that as we've been in moving limbo and on a honeymoon.

So I just got a new job that I thought was for a produce and meat buyer for a coop. No mention of heavy lifting. Well turns out I am also a stocker as we only have one person in the department at a time on shift. So we get large shipments of several 50+ lb boxes and bags I have to lift from the ground to several shelves higher. So far during non-shipment days in fine as taking half empty boxes or bags down to a cart isn't too bad. But today we got a huge order in and I was starting to freak out mentally at what lifting that many could do and listened to peanut on the doppler as soon as I got home. I've always heard 30# or less- has anyone heard anything to support or refute that? My boss doesn't know yet but I am telling him Sunday when he gets back and I am hoping to work something out- I don't want to get fired but neither do I want to risk the babies health.

  • Call your OB tomorrow morning for a personalized guideline- explain all this, and you should get a good answer.

I'm high risk due to PTL/IC with a cerclage and my limit is 15lbs. Or as DH likes to put it- no more than one of our cats. (Which is more like 10 but really easy to judge since I'm picking up the cats all the time)

I have no idea what a normal pregnant person should be lifting though :(

  • I'm a nurse which involves a lot of turning and lifting patients. My OB said to try to keep it to 30 pounds like you said.

Ditto on the OB's advice. When I told my OB what I had been squatting/leg pressing, she got all wide-eyed and said "Nooooooooo." I'm sure your baby is fine, but I would consult with your doc before lifting like that a lot more.

  • Yeah, my 2yo is 30 lbs, and my OB said that's the limit.  Good luck with everything.

  • I have a heavy lifting sort of job as well. In my last pregnancy my doc said as long as I felt ok doing it, then I was fine. She said the danger was to me due to the Relaxin in my system and not to the baby. I was regularly lifting 40-60 lbs until about 36 weeks.

My limit is my daughter - 32 pounds. Also I've been able to lift other random objects or push furniture before this week but I'm done with that. I shoveled some super light snow a couple days ago and it was a killer- I def overdid it even though it was hardly anything. If you feel like something is too much, it probably is.
  • I had a pretty big SCH with DS and was limited with him (I ended up quitting because it wasn't worth the worry to me) and they continued that limit of 20 lbs into this pregnancy as well but I had slight spotting early on.

  • I was told no more than 25lbs but he was more comfortable with 20lbs. I think I am being treated with kid gloves due to my history.

  • Ok sounds like 30 or less is recommended- I was lifting heavy before but not in a stocking type job just in the weight room so I don't know if that qualifies but I will clarify with my ob. I know I'm past the largest mc worry stage but I also am high risk so I tend to worry move. Yesterday was the most I had to move/lift and it freaked me out so I am hoping I can make something work with my boss. I really need this job as I am already on Medicaid as it is.

Good luck! I know there are obviously shady ways around it, but it's illegal to fire someone because they request accommodations like not lifting a bazillion pounds while pregnant. Just keep that in mind if they so much as hint at that. And you mentioned that you were not made aware that there was heavy lifting involved in the job, so I don't see how anyone could fault you. I'm sure your manager will be happy for you and more than willing to work with your needs for, really, just a few months.
