Transitioning to toddler bed

Well, Corbin can now swing his leg up and rest his foot on the top of his crib rail, no problem. He hasn't made an attempt to actually climb out yet, but I worry about waiting too long and him discovering that he can climb out and hurting himself. In the past few weeks we've toddler-proofed the room - his furniture is attached to the wall so that he can't pull it over and we've figured out a way to prevent him from being able to slide the closet doors open.

Have you moved your kiddo to a toddler bed yet, or plan on doing so soon? If you have older children, when did you transition them and how did it go?

Re: Transitioning to toddler bed

  • DD has no interest so far in climbing out of her crib; thankfully she's just happy to sit there and read her books in bed (we always keep 2-3 at the foot of the crib). The day she does decide to explore like your guy is the day we'll change her. I don't plan on doing anything special. Just toddler proof the room like you said. My mother said she just changed beds, kept the door closed so we couldn't wander the house. She said she found us sleeping on the floor of the room a couple mornings, but eventually we gave in and just stayed in bed.

  • We bought a bed for her room a few months ago, but DD still sleeps in her crib. At this point she doesn't seem ready to move, and hasn't tried to climb out.

--picklesx: what is your solution to prevent LO from sliding open his closet doors? DD loves doing this.

  • I bought spring clamps from Lowe's (they look like the clamps on the ends of jumper cables) and placed one on the top track next to each door. Works pretty well and they were less than $2 per clamp. I tried to force them open and they barely budged so I'm confident DS won't be able to move them either.

  • Nope my 3 year old is still in his crib even though he can get out, I can hear him though so no sneaking out. Lucas my May baby climbed out once it hurt has never done it again. I'm not ready to have a place to put him where I know he's safe.... Not to mention getting him to go to sleep is still a struggle if they can get up GOOD LUCK

  • DD is staying in that crib as long as humanly possible. Are the sides and back of your crib higher than the front rail? Ours is, so I plan to turn it around to put the front rail against the wall. The next step will be to take the bottom out of the crib and sit the mattress on the floor inside the rails. You can safely do that as long as the mattress is thick enough that there is no gap between the top of the mattress and bottom of the crib rails and no metal bolts or anything where your LO could get to them..

  • We put lo in a single bed with a rail a week ago coz her cot broke. She loves it and sleeps better. We've had no trouble with her getting out of bed and her room and all upstairs is safe. She really likes that we can snuggle up in her bed and read a book goodnight without then needing to move her to her cot. See if it workes for you.
