Did you feel sick after getting the flu shot?

Today at my appointment, I had a last second decision on getting the flu shot. I had been considering it for months and wasn't sure if I should get it or not.

My arm is super sore and has been since she gave me the shot. After about 3-4 hours later I started coughing and my lungs started feeling sore. About 6-7 hours later I started feeling that weak/drained "I am getting sick" feeling. I probably told DH 20 times tonight "I don't feel good". I figure it is just my immune system doing it's job.

Just wondering if you had any symptoms after getting the flu shot.. and if so, how long did they last? This is my first flu shot and I am really unsure how long to expect to feel this way.

Re: Did you feel sick after getting the flu shot?

  • Just a sore spot on my arm! Otherwise no symptoms.

  • Not this year, but that has happened to me before after having a flu shot. Usually after a day or so I would go back to feeling normal and the cold-like symptoms would go away.

  • I didn't feel sick after my flu shot. However I'm now sick so I feel robbed, lol.
  • This always happens to me after a flu shot. This year, I ended up getting a cold a day or so after I got my flu shot. It sucked, but luckily So Cal has had dry weather lately and it cleared my cold up. I normally don't get the flu from the shot, but I do feel like poo for a few days. Get better soon!

  • Nope I didn't feel sick, didn't even have the sore arm.

    hope you feel better soon.

  • I got a flu shot a few years ago. I felt achy, a little feverish, and just plain terrible for about 2-3 days.

  • Happened to me this year. Arm was sore for days and the day after the shot I was feverish and faint (almost blacked out after walking the dog). Drink lots of fluid.
  • I always react that way. It sucks. But the real flu would suck so much more.

Mine only ever really lasts for a day, day and a half. Because of it, I try to get my flu shot on a Friday so I have the next day off from work.

    Hope you feel better!

  • I was definitely off this year and just didn't feel right the next day. DH said the same thing and he never says that. We were both perfectly fine the 2nd day though.

  • My arm wasn't sore, but I had a fever and felt pretty horrible. Achey muscles, headache, exhausted. I think it lasted 2 days? My daughter got a good fever afterwards too and seemed to feel the same way.
  • I've NEVER had a flu shot and really didn't want it... but they made me feel like my baby would die if I didn't get one... so I relented.  My arm was pretty sore and I felt run-down for a couple of days, but didn't get sick.

This was my first time getting it (beginning of November) no side effects at all, just a sore arm for the afternoon :)

    Edit: spelling
  • I got the shot earlier in my pregnancy and it didn't work! I'm sick with the flu right now :(
  • It's been a long, long time since my first flu shot, but I remember DH got his first when we first started dating and he seemed to be more run down from that one than he has been in subsequent years.  Might just be the body building up immunity?

I will say my arm was more sore this year than previously, but I had no other side effects.

  • Thank you for all the responses.. today I felt normal (other than having a headache). My arm was a little sore when I first woke up. I asked DH if he was going to get one and he said "No way". I told him I would rather feel down for a day then to get the flu and be sick for a week. He said he might get one soon. He never grew out of being afraid of needles, lol.

  • Nope, just a sore arm.
  • I didn't have that this year but I have in the past. Tired, run down, sometimes low grade fever. But only a day or so and still much better than the actual flu!

  • Now that I put this out in the universe, I'm going to be sick the rest of the winter. I didn't get the flu shot this year and don't plan to in the future. I have gotten the flu shot in the past (was offered free at my previous employer, so why not), and every time I have actually been more sick, and sick more often than the years I haven't gotten it. I'm no doctor and to be honest I haven't read up on the flu shot at all, but I feel like different people must react to it differently.

  • Nope, feel great and haven't gotten sick once. Maybe b/c of the shot? Not sure but I feel great. I just take Benadryl for allergies.
