What did u do the day you delivered?

So as the day quickly approaches and I woke up secretly wishing I was going into labor (if ur mobile I'm 38 weeks 5 days) because I was super tired and didn't want to work. But then thought going into labor would probably not be the most restful thing ;)
Anyway for those who are STMs or who have ur baby what did u do the day u went into labor as soon as you knew? Did u just sit and time contractions? Do some last minute prep work? Eat a "last meal"? Have that second cup of coffee for some needed energy?

Re: What did u do the day you delivered?

  • I was on strict bedrest until a scheduled induction.  I followed that bed rest all day Sunday until dinner and then said screw it I am being induced tomorrow and I am going next door to the neighbors for dinner (they had invited us).  Was over their house for about 2 hours and came home and went back on bed rest.  At 11:45pm I went to bed to go to sleep and at 12 midnight I got back up because I was having contractions about 7-10 mins apart.  I let DH sleep and I stayed up all night in the living room sitting on my ball and timing the contractions.

DH woke up at 5:30 to get ready for work (his last day before the induction that night at 7pm) and I told him to call work and tell them he was starting his paternity leave.  We both took showers, I had yogurt for breakfast and then I called the doctor.  He said to come to the hospital then instead of waiting for that night (by now they were about 5 mins apart).

We stopped at Dunkin Donuts on the way because I wanted some chai tea and made it to the hospital around 7:45 am (just as my mom was walking in for work).  I had DS at 8:14pm Monday night.

  • I was scheduled for a C-section but my water ended up breaking on its own.  I called Dr. who told me to head straight into hospital for C-section (DD was breached).  I straightened my hair and put on my make-up before I left the house.  Contractions weren't bad at all and I didn't want all those 1st day pictures taken while looking frumpy ;).  DH thought I was crazy!  We were last to arrive at the hospital behind all our family (DH had called everyone to tell them we were headed in).

  • DS1- I woke up, stood up to head to the bathroom and that's when my water broke. So we got me to the car, got to the hospital, and at the end of 28 hours, had a big baby boy.

DS2 and DD- I had scheduled inductions, so we woke up early, got breakfast at McDonalds, then headed to the hospital. I hadn't eaten before going in with DS1, and wasn't allowed to eat once I got there, so I was VERY HUNGRY!

Sorry, but not too exciting here.

  • I didn't believe I was actually in labor, so I hung around the house timing contractions and trying to nap.  By the time they'd been happening for 12 hours, and I had decided I probably was in labor, I did have DH get me some pizza so I could have a real meal before we went to the hospital a few hours later.

  • With DS, I watched the red sox game and ate dinner.  I was in labor for 36+ hours with him so I probably should have eaten more the next morning. With DD I went into labor during childbirth class.  After class I went home and ate a meal and packed up my stuff and headed back to the birth center since I was already 4cm+ dilated.

  • I was up the night before from midnight on with contractions. I watched tv and tried to sleep then I watched a movie, then decided to get up an go talk with my H as he had just got up.Then my water broke so I told him he wasn't going to work. Got in the shower shaved my legs. I can't remember if I ate at home or not. I know we stopped for toast at the hospital cafe while calling people.

  • I suspected I was in labor in the middle of the night, but kept sleeping as long as I could. I timed my contractions a bit but they weren't that close together or painful. So when I got up, I tried to do laundry (first time I ran the washer without the clothes in it and during the second run we ended up leaving for the hospital), bounced on my balance ball and got a few things done. Then off to the hospital I went and had DD by noon.

  • I realized my water broke after going to the bathroom and feeling wet while I washing my hands. I woke up DH and then we packed our hospital bags. He got up his daughter and we made sure she ate. I wish I had eaten more than a granola bar as labor was long and I couldn't eat anything during. We went to the hospital within an hour of my water breaking even though I didn't have contractions. I'm GBS+ so it was important to me to get antibiotics started right away.

  • I scheduled a massage for my due date. The way I had something to look forward to if I made it (I'm a longtime client and they would have understood a last minute call that I was in labour). As it turns out I did make it and it was a great idea! After that I went shopping alone and had a nice leisurely lunch. DH and I had a quiet dinner together at home that night too.

Went into labour that night. It was a nice way to spend my last day "alone".

  • I hit post too soon and can't seem to edit on mobile. I started getting cx in my back around 8-9 that night. Waited 2 hours until it was pretty much unbearable and headed to the hospital. I was only 2-3cm but was admitted because the cx were so regular and strong.

  • I had an "urgent" induction, so I didn't know I was being induced until I got to my 41 week appt. When they told me we were having a baby that day I asked if we could have a few hours to get some last minute things done. I wanted to eat so we went and ate a big meal (even though they told me not to- after more than 24 hours of labor I was glad I didn't follow those instructions). I also made calls, went to work to get my check, etc. I planned on going home to take a shower but ended up just taking one at the hospital. My sister brought nail polish and painted my toes for me.
  • I had the day off when I went into labor with DS1. I had been enjoying the sunshine, reading outside, and took my dog for a nice walk. At noon I was having timetable contractions. Timed them for 2ish hours, called DH, took a shower, had a snack, packed my bag, and went to L&D around 6. DS1 was born at 4:02 the next morning.
  • I was induced and the only thing I remember doing was waiting for the phone call from the hospital to tell me it was time. I'm sure DH and I probably just hung out at home.
  • We have a scheduled induction on Sunday. My plans include sleeping in as late as possible, washing up and getting pretty. Then we're heading for Christmas at MIL's. Probably go home and nap some more. Then go out to a nice dinner before we head to the hospital.

  • I didn't believe I was in labor until I was in triage and the nurse said "Nope, you're staying with us!" so I didn't do anything I think I would have if I had REALLY known. I took a shower because I wanted to be clean if I left the hospital and went back out to run errands. I did time contractions but I seriously just thought they would go away. I didn't eat anything all day. I wasn't hungry at all.

^ For reference, I was 19, had sex the night before and was worried some nurse at the hospital would check me, KNOW I'd had sex and be like "this is what you get for being a slut now go home!" and also it was the same day 2 cousins and 1 uncle already shared a birthday. I thought there was NO WAY I was having my son that day, too.

My mom's 2nd labor was less than 3 hours. I think I will be moving at lightning pace whenever I go into labor this time just in case! My brother was born less than 30 minutes after she got to the hospital. Yikes.

  • I started having contractions about 41 hours before Julia was born.  Nothing too crazy or painful at that point.  I was timing contractions on the way to work and worked a full day.  I fell asleep timing contractions that night.  I woke up early the next morning and told DH we should go to the hospital.  At the hospital they confirmed I was in active labor, but still only 2 cm and not active enough so they sent me home to labor there.  We went home and had a restful afternoon.  Ate lunch, watched TV, took a nap.  They told me not to come back til I couldn't talk through my contractions, so that's what I did.  But we really didn't do much except chill out together for the last time before Julia arrived!

  • I was working. I had my 36 week checkup on a Friday so I worked till lunch, got home, showered and shaved, packed my hospital bag because I wasn't sure if I was having contractions or not, and headed an hour and 45 mins away to my dr. My appt was at like 2:45 and I was admitted to L&D about four because I was in fact in labor, 4 cm, and 90% effaced.

After pitocin and back labor I finally begged for an epidural around 7 and the OB waited on them to get me laid back down and checked me. I was at a 10 so we waited for it to take effect where I pushed for 2.5 hour and had him at 9:25.

I wish I would have eaten. I didn't get to have lunch or breakfast that day for rushing around. I wish I would have stopped for a cheeseburger on the way. Anything. Luckily I had family there and as soon as I was cleared to eat it had McDonald's.
  • I had a scheduled C/S. I woke up, took a nice long shower, and leisurely spent time doing my hair and makeup. I had to be at the hospital at 10:30am, which was not too bad.

  • I love reading these stories! I guess I hadn't really thought about what I want to do - the reminder to eat is a good one :-)

And drink lots of water!  I forgot to drink plenty of water during the day while I was waiting and they ended up blowing out the vein in the back of my hand trying to get the hep-lock in.

  • It was my due date, and I went to work that morning.  I left around 10am for my 40 week doc appointment.  They wanted to do a growth ultrasound because they thought baby was huge.  Gave me my ultrasound, and went to go sit down in the waiting room to wait for the doctor to come get me for my appointment, when my water broke.  They took me in a room to check me, and sure enough my water had broken, told me to get my things together and head to the hospital.  We went home and got our stuff together.  I didn't start contracting until about 3 hours after my water broke, and ended up delivering him at 10:31pm that night.  Right on his due date.

  • With DS, I was induced two days before my due date - so I worked up until the day before. Nothing exciting.

Should I go into labor on my own this time, my OB wants me to get to the hospital for monitoring [given my loss history]. We're planning on inducing me three weeks from tomorrow if she doesn't come by then, and I'll work up until the very last second.

  • All my babies were inductions.
DD#1- I was prepared. Bags packed. Got up that morning showered, shaved, put on my makeup and headed in for my 630 appt.
DD#2-after being bumped for my original induction day to the next day, I as more than ready to deliver. Due to staffing I was not allowed to come in any sooner than noon. So had the morning to hang out, eat, relax and make sure last minute things were done. So food was a must before we went in.
DD#3- so so unprepared. 37 week NST and my amniotic fluid was critically low requiring immediate induction. I had no bag packed (not even at home) no car seat in the car, nothing was ready. So they allowed me 2 hrs to go home gather my things and come back. Went home did my dishes, picked up my house, (since my IL's we're coming over to watch the kids) and packed my bag. On the way back to the hospital we drove through Burger King and I ate myself silly. Then went to have a baby.
  • With DD I went straight into the hospital for bleeding so there wasn't any waiting around.
With DS I had a pretty good feeling it was "the day" around dinner time, so I tidied up a little but mostly tried to rest/sleep as much as possible. I was hoping to get a full night's sleep and go in in the morning but the contractions kept me up and I ended up going in around 2am.

I definitely advocate sleeping and resting if at all possible... labor is exhausting.

I had an induction scheduled for Thursday. So Tuesday Dh went to work trying to finish things out. I was talking to my sister and told her I was bummed not to have that moment when you race to the hospital because your water broke. I got off the phone to get an apple. I took one bite and boom Water broke - literally 1 minute after complaining to my sister. I wasn't sure. I ran to the bathroom and sure enough it broke and there was Mecuonium. I called doc and they said to go to l&d immediately. I called Dh and his response was - are you fucking kidding me? He came home 40 minutes later and off we went. It was slow leak until we got to l&d triage when it started pouring out of me and I puddled all over the place.

I was not dilated really and not contracting so they started pitocin. Soooo from start about 845 to finish 11:06 it was about 19.5 hours of fun.

  • With DD I went in to be checked and was determined I was in labor but not far enough yet, so I would be more comfortable at home. I mostly just focused on laboring because those contractions suck.

If today is the day, then my answer is watch TV, rest on the couch, and clean up around the house.

  • With #1 I was working, finished my shift and realized I'd been having contractions all morning. It was 3 days after my due date.

#2- we were at my nieces birthday party and I was so uncomfortable the entire time. Got back to our family lake home, put our son to bed, went to go pee one more time before I went to bed and stood up from the toilet and my water broke...again 2-3 days after my due date.

  • I had a doctor's appointment at 10 am, took DD to Chik-Fil-A afterward, and came home and installed the car seat and did some errands. As soon as I sat down from doing that, my water broke at 2 pm.

  • I worked all day Friday and then went out for Mexican food with DH that night.  Within an hour of getting home from dinner I felt my first real contraction.  I tried to sleep that night but didn't because of the contractions.  The next morning DH called the hospital and we were told to wait until contractions were consistently 5 min apart.  I rolled around in bed counting contractions for hours and they never got consistent.  I do remember showering many times because it helped relieve some pain, and also remember trying to eat a slice of bread which took a few hours to get down.  At 4pm on Saturday I give up and demanded we go to the hospital.  The contractions were causing shooting pains down my legs and I was convinced if we waited any longer I wouldn't be able to walk to the car or into the hospital.  We were in triage a few hours before being admitted.  DD was born Sunday 250am.  My contractions never got to 5 mins consistently.  This time I will wait until I can no longer handle the pain and risk being turned away.

  • I was induced, but it was due to low AF discovered at a routine appointment at 39 weeks. I hadn't slept well the night before, but I got up and went to work anyway. There was a meeting where I got thrown under the bus for something I had nothing to do with, and I left work early for my appointment pretty much hating my job. My mom and DH met me at the OB's office for the appointment, and that's when we learned the fluid was low and I was sent to L&D to be induced.

Had I known, I would have stayed home that day. Oh well.

  • #1 - my labor started really quickly (started at 3-1-1). It was 12/29, so when DH got home from work, I demanded that we take down the tree because I didn't want it up (and dead) when we got home from the hospital.

#2 - I was at the hospital being monitored for BP (which wasn't high once I got to the hospital) when my contractions started, so I didn't do much :)

  • My baby is 9 days old! I had been up with contractions since 2am, but was sleeping between them. When our son woke up at 7:30, we all got up and I had a coffee while my husband made us all blueberry pancakes. I knew that I was for sure in labour. I was moaning and having to really focus during my contractions. Since we were having a home birth, I tidied my house and played with my toddler between contractions. I thought briefly about shaving (for easier recovery), but didn't get around to it. I was 7 cm when my midwife arrived.

  • I went in for my bi-weekly NST scan that I'd been having since I went into preterm labor at 34 weeks. My amniotic fluid level was getting lower and lower at each scan, and was told a few days before that if it was lower than 6 at my next scan I'd be induced that day. Went in and my level was at 4. They told me to go home, grab my bags and head to the hospital (I was at my dr.'s office). I picked up some lunch for my Husband and I on my way home, we ate lunch together at home and I remember him saying "this is the last time it's going to be just us in this home for a long time." And we both nervously smiled, and headed to the hospital. They started me on pitocin and after 27 hours of labor, I stalled at 7cm, spiked a high fever, and had blood in my urine. Next thing I knew I was being rushed for an emergency c-section. Our son was born at 39 weeks 21 1/2 inches long and 9 lbs 8 oz and perfectly healthy. I'm glad I ate when I did because I wasn't able to eat the entire 27 hours of labor, plus over 15 + hours after my surgery. I remember I was STARVING by the time I was allowed to eat. Hospital food never tasted so good.

I took a shower to relieve the pain and ate some watermelon because I was afraid it would be my last meal for awhile :) Luckily, I delivered 7 minutes after arriving to the hospital so I was able to get breakfast and ancient nap before visitors arrived.
