Developmental Differences

My boys are almost 4 months, 10 weeks adjusted. They are identical but one was IUGR and still about 2.5 lbs lighter. He also seems to be a little behind developmentally. He will smile and sometimes laugh but his brother is much more aware of his surroundings, watches his twin and has been rolling over for a month. I know every baby is different but I can't help being a little concerned. Is it normal for one to lag behind a bit, even for IDs?

Re: Developmental Differences

  • Yes it is normal…. and very hard not to compare.  I think my twins are some of the most identical I've met skill wise and one still lagged a month behind the other for most of the time.  I also think that the IUGR can affect the littler one in the developmental areas.  I'd talk it over with the pedi at his next appointment, but try not to compare them.

  • Thanks Happy, maybe my B will be the same and catch on quickly when he decides to get around to new things.

  • As long as they are within normal ranges, there should be no issue. Some things mine have done within days of each other, others, like crawling, there were a couple months. Even IDs are different kids, but if your mother instinct is prickling, bring up your concerns with your pediatrician. It is really hard to not compare when they are the same age. (I would have no idea how many days apart my older two did things, but since it was not all at the same time, I never thought to worry).

It is so hard not to compare. My girls have taken turns with being ahead/behind developmentally. My smaller one (sIUGR, like yours) has tended to take a bit longer to reach physical milestones, but has been more verbal than her sister.

  • My little guy rolled over for the first time today! 6 weeks after his brother but he's working on it.
