Preemies

NPR - stomach bug? (Long sorry)

This isn't preemie related but some of you have older kids and I trust your experiences. I've already talked to my dr but not yet since this morning's incident.

2 weeks ago ds threw up on a Sunday and then again on Monday. We kept him home until Wednesday. He hadn't thrown up in >36 hours but his stools were loose. He was fine all week.

Then last week he was ok but had loose stools off and on and wasn't 100%. We figured the stomach bug was on it's way out. Saturday we had my Christmas celebrations and he seemed fine. Running around and playing. Then before bed he throws up everything. Sunday he threw up a tiny bit early in the morning but nothing more than some spit and gagging really. Monday he goes to school (>24 hours after gagging) and is fine. I pick him up and we leave school and he throws up everywhere. Tuesday I'm home with him and he is lethargic and the only incident was at breakfast when he ate pancakes and threw up almost immediately but then kept eating. He seemed fine afterward. Today we took him out with us and he had cheese quesadillas (he wasn't eating much and we knew he would eat them) he eats and as soon as he's done throws it up.

He's seemed fine after he throws up. Never seems uncomfortable or in pain. Never any blood or anything like that and staying hydrated. Could the stomach flu last this long???

Oh and dh and I both feel off. Our stomachs feel ick and we are in the bathrooms often. No throwing up (sorry tmi probably)

If you've read this far I appreciate your input!!!

The stomach "flu" (misnomer, not actually the flu) or stomach bug generally doesn't last very long--a few days maybe. It's possible that it could last longer, but if it persists for more than a week (and from what I understand by reading your post, that is the case, correct?) you will probably want to call his pediatrician for advice.

My DD has had diarrhea that has lasted roughly a week before completely clearing up on its own. I made sure she got plenty of fluids (Pedialyte helped a lot). In her case it was not accompanied by vomiting, but Pedialyte would be beneficial in that case as well.

  • It came and then went and then came again. Maybe we were lucky enough to get two rounds? He had it right before his 18 month appt (16 adjusted) and he had lost a little bit of weight since his last appt (although I am about 99% positive they weighed him with his clothes the last time because it was a check for a cold) and they were worried about his weight loss.  So we have to go back in a few weeks and I'm worried about that too.

In a little less than 2 weeks he's thrown up about 5-6 times and had diarrhea on about 3 days... a few other days were loose but not that bad.  so it hasn't been a lot. it's just been off and on and it's getting old!

I think the on and off thing is probably pretty normal! When DD had that bout of diarrhea, she did have a day or two where she had mostly normal stools and then the diarrhea hit for another couple days or so. It's definitely frustrating and nerve-wracking. She caught it from her cousin over Thanksgiving and he had the same problem with it also lasting a little over a week.

FX that your little man is completely healthy soon!

  • He seems to be on the mend. His bug turned into a blessing. Because he was sick I didn't hold a baby a Christmas and didn't let ds near the baby. The baby was just hospitalized with rsv. It's so sad that he has it but the selfish part of me is so thankful ds and I didn't go near him.
