Suppository

DS hasn't had a bowel movement in 5 days (EBF), so pediatrician suggested a glycerin suppository to see if that helps. FTM and haven't ever had to give one before, so do any of you BTDT mommy's have any helpful tips and/or advice?! TIA!

Re: Suppository

  • Use a little bit of KY or other lube so it slides gently. It's very easy, just a quick pop in then wait.

  • Also, if you feel the need to do something, try using a rectal thermometer to stimulate the muscles.

  • Thanks! He doesn't seem to be in any pain and he's still passing gas.
  • Yeah I would just wait it out. He will go soon. :) but when he does, it will be a big one so be ready!

My ebf baby goes anywhere from 7-14 days without pooping. It's normal. Don't give a suppository. If she is acting fine, passing gas, and her tummy is soft, she's fine.

    Agree completely.

  • DH is at the pharmacy now but I think we'll just wait it out for a couple more days. He's still happy and comfortable so I'm not too worried. I got excited when he pooped before so I can only imagine how excited I'm going to be this time! ;)

This exactly. Just did this and had a BM an hour later... Completely recommended!

  • In case it doesn't change my pedi suggested a tablespoon of dark kiro (sp?) in a bottle, worked like a charm. We also supplement and her formula was causing painful constipation :(
  • I wouldn't be comfortable with 5 days at this point, Id do the suppository. There are instructions on the box that spell it out better than i could explain it, but instead of putting a diaper back on, try putting him on a towel on the changing pad and cycling right after you insert it.

  • I agree with 5 days being okay for ebf baby as long as the baby is acting comfortable.

do you take vitamin D supplements? I notice Lo doesn't have a bm as often when I take them regularly, so sometimes I'll skip a day and she has one then. I don't know if its coincidence or not.

  • Do not give a suppository. It's totally normal for bf babies. Mine went 9 and was fine. They are using everything they eat
