Can you use unfinished bottle?

This is a very FTM question here - if LO doesn't finish her bottle of expressed breast milk is it ok to put it back in the fridge and offer it to her later?

  • Loading the player...
  • I do up to 1 1/2 hours later I will use it. Otherwise I toss it.
  • If it was thawed its good for 24 hours in fridge. Don't refreeze. If you just pumped the milk you technically don't even need to refrigerate it before the next feeding

  • What if it's breast milk from
The fridge? Is there a time limit on that? I usually give LO milk from fridge at night so hubby can help out, but can we bring it up before bed so it's room
Temperature for a while (4-5 hours?) sorry if wording is bad- no sleep! Merry christmas!!

I wouldn't think it would be good 4-5 hours at room temp. The little card the hospital gave me about bm says 1 hour at room temp. Maybe you could put it in a little bottle carrying case with an ice cooler by your bed

I thought it was 7 hours room temp, 7 days fridge, 7 months frozen. I don't remember where I heard that though?
  • Yep, all the info says you can leave bm at room temp for 6 hours (but any longer and you should toss it, ie, don't refrigerate it at that point). Formula must be used within 1 hour from preparation
  • Mayo clinic says 6 hrs for breast milk at room temp

That's the rule in my paperwork.  It's on kellymom too, iirc.

I will go back and read kellymom, whatever they say is right

  • If LO has drank from the bottle you can't reuse it because it has mixed with the digestive enzymes from LO's mouth. I would just pour one ounce in at a time or two ounces depending on how much they are taking.
