S+TMs who've experienced back labor...

What does it feel like? Both my mom and my aunt had back labor with when they went into labor. For the past hour, I've had some pretty severe throbbing, but sharp back pain on my lower left side.

I don't know if it's from how I was sitting on the couch or if I should be calling my doctor.

I'm 36w4d today.

  • Like a thousand knives running down your back.  It's awesome.

What you described just sounds like a back ache.  I've been getting them like crazy in my lower back these past few days. Like almost a constant cramping.  Lay down, drink water and take Tylenol if you need it!

  • @mesjenni - okay. It sort feels like my back is seizing every few minutes. The pain is sharp and throbs while it lasts. My MIL kept saying that it would be great if I went into labor today given big Pop Pop passing today.

  • I have a back ache in the same area as you. Back labor is something else. It is like pokes all over your back. I am thinking I have not had enough water today and that is it. Try drinking water and if it is bad try some tylonel. Hope it goes away soon

  • You could see if it's timeable, but that sounds a lot like my back pain. Your uterus attaches at your lower back which puts strain on the area, and as your pelvis loosens up (and potentially gets out of alignment) it can add to it. Hope you feel better.

I do not mean to be offensive at all with what I am about to say, very truly.

I think that sometimes things like this (what I quoted above) can trick us into putting more meaning into simple coincidences. What you have described sounds like what my back spasms feel like.

I agree with you. I haven't really had back pain this entire pregnancy and it's gotten increasingly worse over the past few days. My doctor insinuating that I may go early too, probably hasn't helped (his opinion is based on baby's size, family history, and something to do with my epilepsy).

I've had a TON of water today and took Tylenol today. Baby boy has been flipping out the past 3 hours. These 3 weeks can't go by fast enough.

  • I have had a huge increase in back pain the last couple of days. Sometimes I think it might be early labour, but then I remind myself that everyone says you know when it's labour. If I'm questioning it, chances are it's not the real thing.
  • I knew.  I have had my fair share of back pain in my life, but back labour was like none other.  In my opinion, if you have to question it still, it's not really worth worrying about.

  • For me, back labor started as period-like back pain, and within a half hour I was laying on the floor, on my side, short of breath with every "spasm". It was VERY uncomfortable.

  • I had back labor with both. It is indescribable. If it is back labor trust me you will know! Hope u feel better soon!!!!
  • Thanks girls. I figured this. Since it runs in my family, I just wanted to be aware of what I should be looking for if it happens. I'm so ready for this little guy to be here!

  • I had no idea back labor was genetic.

  • Lets just say I was ready for heaven lol it was so painful
  • I didn't have it with DD but what you are having is similar to what I'm experiencing... no fun!
  • I had no idea back labor was genetic.

Not necessarily genetic. It has a lot to do with position of the baby (I have a consistently rotating LO in there who doesn't know how to stay head down) and/or if a woman has severe back pain during AF.

Common link between my mom, aunt and me is ovarian cysts and debilitating back pain and cramps during AF (when not on BCP, yay PCOS!) Considering they had it under similar circumstance, I'm aware that the chance is there. I didn't clarify that, I'm sorry.

I had back labor at first and that's what it felt like. But it moved forward after a few hours. Are you feeling better today?

  • @bethughknee - I'm still having this type of back pain but it's spaced out a little farther and is now on both sides. It hasn't moved to the front though

Whomp wahhh. :( Sorry you are still uncomfortable. Maybe a bath? That's been my cure-all, lately. Especially with my jet tub. I wish I belonged to an indoor pool so I could just stand there a little weightless for a while!

This is what my back labor with DS was like as well. Started out feeling like pregnancy lower back discomfort then escalated. I felt sharp pains that were in my lower back and reached around to my sides. They would slowly recede but still throb. When they hooked me up to the monitors and L&D the nurse confirmed that they were contractions. You could definetly time the sharp pains and they got closer and closer together as I progressed. Hope that helps!
