Postpartum Gowns & Nursing Tanks

I know it's not a fashion show and I'll be hopefully delivering in water, so no need for fancies here...but I know there are a lot of comfy looking labor/delivery/PP gowns out there and wondering if anyone has any in particular they recommend...or if they are really even "nice to have." Also, any particular brands of bras and nursing tanks? Going to start shopping for those now...

EDIT: Should add I am not planning a hospital birth, so no hospital gown for me. Thinking a robe might be just fine but wondering what other's experiences are.

Re: Postpartum Gowns & Nursing Tanks

  • Love pea in the pod nursing tanks. Found some cute gowns at motherhood. Honestly only used a gown until my shower after ds was born. Felt more "put together" in comfy leggings, a nursing tank, and long cardigan.

I have some gilligan omalley nursing tanks from target but they are short and wide.

  • I had some super stretchy pjs, sleep nursing bras, a nursing tank, and a robe/zip up hoodie. I didn't like the whole gown thing once I had showered as I didn't feel very put together.
  • IF you are not adverse to wearing out of season clothes, places should have their cozy Christmas Jammies on clearance now, warm and inexpensive.  And yeah, no matter where you give birth, you don't want anything cute, after birth, there are all kinds of bodily fluids coming out of you and your child.  Cheap and washable or tossable is the way to go.

  • No experience with labor gowns as I've only had c/s... Seems like a waste but hey whatever. But for PP, i prefer pjs (drawstring not elastic on case of c/s) with the button up tops. Wear a nursing tank under and then you can just pull on the top over it as needed (I have awful cold/hot flashes after delivery). Gowns are a complete PITA and get caught in the sheets and you flash the whole room getting out of bed... Not good if you have visitors!

I was really longing for "real" clothes after having DS. I packed yoga pants, nursing tanks and a robe. Worked perfectly. I was comfortable and felt good when the family came to visit.

Eta: I gave birth in just a nursing bra - no gown or special clothes needed

  • If you go the gown route.... You can wear two... One open to the back and one to the front so your not all exposed. I learned that trick a few babies ago. I still could BF no problem :)
