March 2014 Moms

Unsolicited product recs from STM

Hi all!
I lurk here mostly- but am feeling the need to post some suggestions on some products as I am doing some shopping in prep for baby #2.
DS#1 was a March 2012 baby, so I feel like I'm going through all the same motions again with the holidays and season changes, but with a very spirited 21 month old.
Ok, here you go:

Gerber clothing sucks.  I don't know how or why they keep making it, as I have yet to find another mom to disagree with me.  Their onesies don't seem to fit any baby- and my mom once bought DS a bunch of tops and jammies, and I had to take them off as soon as they are on.
My favorite are Carter's onesies.  Even Wal-Mart has a line (that I've found to be the cheapest).  They are thick and durable and fit nicely.
Oh- I would suggest getting some side snap tee's (instead of onesies) for the first week or two: (they really help with the umbilical cord, so the onesie isn't rubbing on it)

Diapers:
I think everyone finds their own diapers that work for them.  I was given a number of samples right out of the hospital, and these were the ones that I found worked the best for LO: https://www.amazon.com/Pampers-Swaddlers-Diapers-Economy-Count/dp/B004Q8FFTS/ref=sr_1_3?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1388086746&sr=1-3
They are the Pampers Swaddlers.  They have a yellow line on the front that turns blue when they fill with pee.  Never thought that would be necessary, but it really helps when you're sleep-deprived and looking at a newborn trying to figure out if they need a diaper change even though you just changed them 10 minutes ago.
Once LO was out of the size one, I went thought a number of different diaper brands.  I found Target brand to be the cheapest (about half the cost of Pampers).  I did have to size him up earlier than they claimed on the box- but they have held leaks for almost 2 years now (better than Huggies and Luvs) and I like the green and blue design (perhaps I would be less excited about them if I had a girl).

Nose frida:
When your kid gets a stuffy nose, this works better than the hospital bulbs or electric aspirators (both of which I have wasted money on):
If you start with it early enough, your kid will get used to it and let you use it as they get older too- helping you grab that snot before it gets all over everything else.

Wipes:
I prefer Costco brand.  They are big and strong.  Pampers are nice as they are soft and moist, but the Costco ones are a little cheaper.  Target ones are soft and moist, but really small, so I would have to use a lot more of them to clean a poopy diaper.

(Halo sleepsack swaddle fleece)

Obv. you won't use this right off the bat- but I've seen it at Wal-Mart for about $3, and it makes life super easy.

I would suggest a bath sponge instead of a baby bath (takes up less space, more comfortable for baby, overall works better, and a lot cheaper): https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Comfy-Bath-Sponge/dp/B000H953Y2/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1388087763&sr=1-1&keywords=baby+bath+sponge
They sell them at BRU and a bunch of other places too.  Only costs about $6.  I ended up tossing out my baby bath when someone gave me this.  Might be a good place for you to free up your registry (or return it for something else!)

I bought one of these for the infant car seat (again, it's cold here)- and this worked so much better than a blanket:

Socks:
I found that Trumpette and Old Navy (and Gap) socks stayed on the best.  They also have grippies on the bottoms, which are essential once baby starts to stand (and if yours ends up like mine- they might stand earlier than you were planning!)  BRU, Circo, Gerber (again, f-ing Gerber) all would just fall off.  Old Navy seemed to be the cheapest (about $1 per pair), and they have a lot of cute options.

Breastfeeding:
I successfully BF'd my little one for 18 months.  One of the things that helped me was figuring out that I was going to have to BF in public (a huge key in the success I had).  For me, that meant using a nursing cover.  I bought a couple of $10 ones from those goofy "pay only for shipping" sites- and ended up getting a $40 from Target.  It was bigger, and made for easier clothing adjustments.  I guess my rec is to not skimp on a nursing cover- as there is a huge difference in the normal ones and the cheap ones.

Amber teething necklace.  Get one.  It doesn't help with all the pain and drooling- but it takes a lot of the edge off.  If you like sleeping through the night, you'll purchase one of these.

Ok- I'm sure other STMs have some product recs that they can add.  I do have other baby product that I've loved- but I'm sure there are other comparable products with which I'm unfamiliar.

Happy shower season!

  • I second for making BFing public helped me. At first I was nervous and would go in the bathroom if there was no nursing rooms... however, after a couple of times of that I got annoyed. I got a nice nursing tanks... which I would just pull my normal shirt up. I didn't even use the covers most of the time... just sat in a location of low traffic. I remember the elderly ladies at the mall would smile at me when they walked by.

Also second the Amber teething necklace. I know some consider this voodoo magic beads, but I really do feel it worked!! I purchased amber from these stores and they all been real.

I would like to add a Moses Basket... I got this at my babyshower and didn't even know what it was, but boy did I use that often. I would put the baby in while I would get in the shower with him in the bathroom with me. I also used it often around the house.

Boppy Pillow was also a good gear to have...

  • I always just used blankets for public nursing. I already had them, and had no issues keeping them on. I would just tuck them in the back of my shirt.
  • Of course I should never make such definitive statements! ;-)
I'm with you on the front snap shirts (but I vote Carters brand!)

  • Thanks for the recs!

  • We loved gerber onesies. The run small but once you know that they fit DS great. We especially loved the long sleeve ones for layering.

  • Newborn sleepers with built in fold over mittens from Carter's.... Stride rite robeez socks stay on like none other...if you plan to swaddle don't bother with receiving blankets that have no 'give', the ones with a bit of stretch stay on so much better....I second the bath sponge as opposed to a tub....target's homeedic's noise machine/projector is a gift sent from God, and it's only $20 (we still use it every night as noise travels in our house so it helps block it out)...target diapers are fantastic...I also use their wipes and have been very happy...if you are getting a diaper genie, spring for the brand name bags (or targets brand if available), we tried BRU brand and the whole room smelled like poopy diapers, not worth the $2 savings!!
  • I also didn't like Gerber onsies. Never could get the sizing right. I like Carter's onsies so much more. Well worth the extra cost.

  • The Bumbo. DS had a weakened core for months from two major abdominal surgeries. The bumbo was a huge life saver in helping him learn to sit up to eat.

And Walmart brand overnight diapers. Once he was out of swaddlers (LOVED them), he would pee right through pretty much every other diaper we tried at night. For some reason their store brand diapers are the only ones that work for us. It's definitely worth a special trip to thw other side of town.
