Any advice on how to do it? AJ is 11 months old and will drink water and juice from a sippy. But if I try to give him his formula in a sippy, he'll only drink about an ounce or two before tossing it aside. I then have to put it in a bottle so that he finishes it. Any surefire tips out there?
Re: Transition to sippy cup?
I never put formula in a sippy - he is old enough you could start trying milk in a sippy - a couple oz a day won't hurt him. When you are for sure ready to get rid of the bottle I say go cold turkey. From formula bottles to milk sippies. It took Paige a good 2 days to get used to it. As long as your child doesn't have low weight issues then they are not going to starve if they don't get the "recommended" # of oz per day. As long as there are plenty of wet diapers don't stress out about it. Paige never once cried out in hunger in those two days but she finally realized "Ok if I am thirsty this is what I am getting now" It worked for us. But you have to be strong and not go back just because he wants the bottle. I know other people that have replaced a bottle a week with a sippy until all the bottles were gone but the night time bottle - you could try that too! GL!
The thing about a sippy is that it's NOT a bottle... therefore, your DC shouldn't be drinking 6-8 ounces of milk at a time, he'll take sips out of it at a time, which sounds like what he's doing.
I offer the sippy at mealtimes, after every few bites or so. He'll take a sip if he wants it, if not, we continue. I do this all throughout the day (usually only at meals, occasionally in between if he needs/wants it) and he winds up taking about 2-2.5 sippys a day of milk. More than enough, since it's only recommended to take 16-24 ounces of milk a day.
I went cold turkey right after his birthday, and we dropped his night time bottle a week later. He's been bottle free since. I love it, and he has not had any problems with it, either.
If he's drinking water and juice from a sippy then he's fine. DD has never drunk more than 3 ounces of cow's milk from a sippy at a sitting and she's perfectly healthy. Once your DS stops drinking formula he'll get most of his nutrients from table food and milk will just be one piece of his diet.
I wouldn't worry about it at all and I wouldn't give him formula in a sippy and when he starts cow's milk I would just give it to him in a sippy. He'll drop the bottle when he stops drinking formula.
