Solids and sleeping?

Sorry if this has already been covered lately! LO has always slept through the night since about 6 weeks old. We're combo feeding due to low supply, which might have helped. We got the green light from the pediatrician to introduce solids at almost five months, but we decided to wait, both because we were going on a trip and didn't want to complicate things and because DH is sentimental and was all like "but...MY BABY! *sniff*" So I agreed to wait until six months, which will be New Year's Day.

Last week, LO stopped STTN. He wakes up after 4-5 hours and is ravenous. He already eats A LOT during the day of both breast milk and formula, and is huge (85th for weight, off the charts for height). We're going nuts here (he's a bad napper--another problem we're trying to solve). He used to prefer large amounts of food every 4-5 hours, but now he wants slightly smaller, still large amounts every 3 hours max during the day. He's also gotten fussier and is interested when we eat.

Everybody who has already done this--do you think solids will help him STTN again? I'm tempted to forget NYD and just start them NOW.

Re: Solids and sleeping?

  • It might, it might not but from all the cues your baby's giving you he sounds hungry and ready for solids to me. My LO did start sleeping longer stretches after solids after about a week or so. Just introduce them in between feedings. We did start LO on solids at 5.5 months because he was showing all signs of being ready. GL

  • It sounds to me like a growth spurt, and really you can start solids any time. He may need more food during the day, as crazy as that seems! He could also be hitting a developmental milestone that has him obsessing. Either way, I hope he lets you rest soon!
  • I didn't deal with a situation like yours, but introducing solids has had no effect whatsoever on LO's sleep. He is formula fed.
  • Good to know! Thanks everybody!
  • For us, she stopped STTN when we introduced solids but that could also be a coincidence.

  • so far the increase in solids has led to better sleep for my LO but it's only been 2 days

  • We have been doing solids for abput 2 months. It has not been made him sleep through the night.
  • A week isn't going to make much of a difference. They don't get a whole lot of calories from solids anyway.
  • I agree it sounds like a growth spurt or wonder week.
