Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Has this changed now that you're a mom?

Do you feel like your style of dress has changed?  I look at some of the clothes in my closet and feel like they will NEVER be worn again, stuff I really liked before.  Now my sister (who has a 7 month old) and I jokingly refer to our style as "mommy-on-the-go" as in "you look very 'mommy-on-the-go' today."  LOL.  No "mom-jeans" though!  No high waists and pleats!

Re: Has this changed now that you're a mom?

  • Yes for sure. I wear a lot of cute flats now instead of heels. And no dresses since I am breastfeeding and it would be too hard to pull my boob out!!
Just yesterday my husband saw a sweater I bought at the gap and told me it is very "fashionable mom". And a girlfriend of mine commented on my "stylish mom flats"

  • I pulled out a dress to try on to wear to a wedding, and said, "I feel like I can't wear this now because I'm someone's mom."

Please describe "mommy on the go" style.  :)

  • I bought my first pair of mid rise jeans last week.  Sigh.  But in my defense- they were the only ones that fit right!  I just can't handle having plumbers crack everytime I try to sit down.  Not attractive at.all.

  • Not too much but yes somethings. I guess I just feel like anything too short is not really appropriate since I am a mother. I mean, I still want the MILF look but I think there is a classy and still sexy way to obtain this without letting everyone see everything.
  • Absolutely! No more tight tiny Ts or hoodies and jeans all the time... I'm all about the mom-on-the-go look! I think feeling put together is much more important to me now, almost like I'm afraid to let myself go.

  • starrynight I just did the same thing too! I put on a "sexy" dress and just felt like I look like the mom who never gets out and when she does goes wild trying to look like I am still "young"... I know silly, but I ended up getting a super cute, but pretty conservative dress for New Year's. :-)
  • My body is slightly different, and the function of my clothing has definitely changed.  Plus I still need boob access, and my shirts have to hide the stupid clasps on nursing bras.

So I guess I have "breastfeeding style."  It sucks.

Also, I used to not really care that, due to my long torso, half the shirts I own show my midriff at least a little.  Now they look fuckking stupid with a long nursing tank hanging out the bottom....and I feel completely inappropriate with my midriff showing AT ALL.

I'm going to have to go to some sort of big and tall store and find cute shirts (like, not t-shirts) that don't show my friggin' midriff...

  • I think I dress more conservative now.  Not that I was dressing so crazy before, but I get what you mean.  If I put on something really low cut, or short, I just can't seem to feel comfortable.  I'm sure part of it is that my body has changed a bit, but I will think...I'm someone's mom...

I have this issue too.  I've been wearing a lot of tunic type tops.

  • Ditto the not letting myself go b/c I'm a mom thoughts!  Ok, it's frickin' cold here so currently "mommy-on-the-go" style may consist of nice jeans (maybe a dark tint, slight flare), stylish flats or boots, a long-sleeve shirt with a puffy vest, or a kind-of-sexy sweater (if there is such a thing)!  I am also working the cute scarf, hat, and mittens angle.  To be true mommy-on-the-go, there must have been a minimal effort at hair and make-up, like 2 minutes, hehe.  I wonder what summer "mommy-on-the-go" will bring!
  • No. I don't think I've bought many new clothes since our little guy was born, I'm wearing all my old stuff.

  • Absolutely.  I definately go more for comfort now while trying to remain somewhat fashionable.
  • Sounds almost just like mine but I need to rock some puffy vests!  I forgot about that option.  :)

  • My style has changed since I became a mom.  I dress for comfort versus style.  I try to wear clothes that are comfy and no fuss.  No one wants to lug around a toddler and have to worry about jeans being to low or shirts to tight and short.  I think it all began when I was pg.  Comfort was a must.  but in my defense I still don't own mom jeans.
  • Not really, I have always dressed rather sensibly. I now have a "mommy haircut" according to SIL, but otherwise I don't think things have really changed. No dresses this summer though b/c that makes access to the boob inconvenient.
  • Not so much but I am thinking it's going to start changing, for a couple reasons.

    1. I am starting to think I resemble Peg Bundy a bit! I wear tight pants and 4inch heels everyday, and my hair can sometimes be a bit big, ha. In my defense, I live in Long Island. Sadly, this is acceptable here. Wink I think I am getting older (28) and starting to want to be a bit less flashy. Also, heels w/a 21lb baby are starting to become hazardous!

    2. I wear a full face of makeup-everyday, even on weekends to just go grocery shopping. I have been this way since jr high and it's a hard habit to break, but does the deli clerk really appreciate my bronzer and contoured eyeshadow? Probably not. Also, sometimes after I snuggle DS, his little face is shimmery. My 8 month old doesn't need to look like he just walked away from a lap dance.

  • No, my style has not changed. I made a resolution that I wouldn't start dressing slopping or 'mom-ish' after becoming a mother.
  • I've been trying on some of my old clothes and CAN'T believe how SHORT some of the tops are.  I always dressed modestly, but most of my tops just reached the top of my jeans.  No way I'd wear those now!  I'm throwing out my whole closet and starting over.  Besides... looks like I'm back into maternity anyway.

  • I've invested in tons of yoga pants. Old Navy and New York & Co have really cute ones!
  • My style is a lot more casual now, but that's mostly due to being laid off 4 months ago. I was in a wedding 2 weeks ago, and I had to wear heels for the first time in 9 months. Yeesh.

Other than that, no, I wouldn't say my style has changed at all. I've always been a fairly conservative/classic dresser, so other than my jeans going up one size, I'm pretty much wearing the same stuff as before DS.

  • Not really.  I have actually started branching out and wearing a few trendy things here and there (leggings, for example) because I'm 20 lb less than pre-preg and feel way more confident about my body.  I've never been this thin so I kind of want to show off!
  • I was just thinking that today - how I'd rather be in comfortable clothes, jeans, tshirts, sweatshirts, sneakers, my Emu's, than in the tighter clothes I used to wear, etc.  I would definitely call it "Mommy on the Go" look, lol!  I like that.
