Head bumps

This mommy needs some consoling.  In the last 24 hours LO has had THREE bumps to the head.  The first was last night, we had rearranged the furniture for the tree, and then went out shopping.  When we returned home, I went to pick LO up from grandma's arms and slammed her head into the chandelier.  The chair didn't used to be there so I wasn't even thinking about a chandelier being above me.  She cried (with me!) for about 2 minutes and was fine. Not 2 hours later, she falls backward onto a plastic toy while DH was playing with her.  Cries again for a few minutes.  Then tonight she was crawling and slipped on the wood floor, and slammed her head.  Now she has a nice big bruise for Christmas =(  Of course all I am worried about now is her having a concussion so I'm not going to sleep at all tonight and keep checking on her.  I know we can't wrap our kids in bubble wrap, but man... The poor girl.  All I keep thinking is it's all my fault, we should have been more vigilant.  Has anyone else had any head bumps and LO was just find afterward?  I need some happy endings.  I'm feeling like a terrible mom right now.

Re: Head bumps

  • One of my best girlfriends is a neonatologist and mother of two young boys and after my LO had a bad bump, she told me just to keep an eye on him and if he seemed "off" or dazed or was vomiting or anything, to take him in -- otherwise not to worry.  She first asked me if the fall was higher or lower than 3 feet (lower), and if he lost consciousness (no).  I hope that helps.

  • DS bumps his head almost daily! It bothers me way more than it bothers him. I stay calm and usually he just continues with whatever he's doing without a peep of any sort. They are pretty resilient! :)

  • If it's any consolation DD slipped from my hands in the bath tonight and bumped her head on the side of the tub. After bath time we were playing and she was crawling over my legs, some how rolled and flipped onto the floor head first. She's already had way more bumps than DS did at this point, but she also wants to be into everything, whereas he was content just watching.

  • TONS of bumps, he falls all the time! We don't make a big deal of it at all, we ignore it in fact. It doesn't seem to phase him as much anymore now either. He's pulled over the end table on top of himself and the full recycle bin, but he just gets scared/shocked a little and then recovered quickly.

I've always thought it's important to let them fall and recover on their own without making a big deal out of it. He's great at falling now, he knows how to catch himself properly and his knocks/bumps aren't quite as painful. We also don't need to worry about following him everywhere as he maneuvers around, standing up holding onto furniture.

I do watch him closely when he's sitting on the couch/bed of course, he's even learning how to swing his legs down now and get off the couch though!

This is us!  She is constantly on the go and wanting to get into things.

I am feeling better now.  When she went to sleep the bruise and swelling had went down a lot.  And jeez, she only fell from a crawl, so not more than 5 inches from the floor, but that goose egg looks like she fell off the bed!  She only ever cried for maybe two minutes, it's me that ends up more upset haha.
  • I know it's hard, but head bumps are normal. I have accidentally bumped DS's head on the door frame a couple of times (Carrying him with my arms full). When he was learning to sit up, he had more than a couple of head bumps. While you should of course b careful and keep an eye on the situation, some bumps are totally normally and are most likely not going to lead to concussions!

  • DS has had a bunch of head bumps as well, especially now that all he wants to do is pull up to stand on things. Even when im beside him watching, he still manages to bonk his head every once in a while. Like PPs have said, keep an eye on any noticeably different behavior, but otherwise theyll be fine :) with how much more mobile our babies are becoming it is to be expected.

Yes. As much as we try to be vigilant, we can't prevent all bumps from happening :( I'm sure you are doing the best you can and its tough not to feel badly but don't be too hard on yourself :)

  • I kinda regret getting the cube (just a little) because he falls so much and still manages to bash his face and head against the sides of it. He has hit his eye and had a nice red mark for a few hours. MIL instantly gets worked up if he falls and that makes him worked up and cry. I don't instantly get him (although it is hard) and see if he works it out himself and 90% of the time he does.. but he will lay there for a second probably thinking about what the heck just happened lol.

I know it is hard.. but they are at that age I guess where they are beginning to be mobile and so they have to get used to this thing called gravity.
