How soon will your provider strip membranes?

A friend of mine is due Jan. 17. Her midwife said that since she's 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced she'll strip her membranes at this week's apt if she's another 1/2 cm dilated. I told her I think it's a bad idea since baby will barely be full term and dilation really means nothing (she's convinced it's a sign she is ready to go into labor). I'm not a professional, but I know that sometimes the waters get accidentally broken when membranes are swept and I think 37 weeks is far too early for this. She has no health conditions or risks, is just "done being pregnant." She has also already started things like nipple stimulation. I feel bad, but I told her I feel bad for her little guy and think she should wait so that he isn't born with breathing issues and freaked her out. Will any of your providers strip this early? I'm wondering if I'm wrong and the stripping really isn't that big of a deal.

Re: How soon will your provider strip membranes?

  • It may depend on the provider.

My midwife suggested nipple stimulation starting at 37 weeks is appropriate for me to help with my supply (this is my third child and I have previously struggled with breast feeding).

My blood pressure is high so she has suggested that a stretch and sweep will be performed (with my consent of course) at my next dr appointment as I will be 39 weeks. My understanding is that a s&s is performed to loosen the membranes which can trigger your body into releasing hormones to trigger labor.

I had a s&s with my second child, but I'm not entirely sure it moved anything along as I had the baby 4 days after the procedure. I don't think it works unless your body is ready to go into labor.

  • Omg, I would never do this that early... At 40 weeks at a scheduled induction then yes, maybe start with that.

  • Mine won't do it until 38/39 weeks. They say it won't do anything unless you are ready to go into labor though.

  • I'm due the day before, 1/16 and my Dr said they may start doing it at 38 weeks.

  • My practice hasn't even done an internal yet! I'll be 39 weeks tomorrow! Guess they figure let nature take its course!
  • I'm due the same day as her but my provider won't move the process along for me until 39 weeks, the only reason I want induced is so that my LO can have the surgeon I picked out for her for her legs because he goes on vacation 1/18 and he said the sooner we get a treatment plan the better off my Lil girl will be.
  • I went to my due date both with DS1 and DS2 and the membranes were not stripped in either case (two different very good practices). I would refuse at 37 weeks.

37 weeks seems early - I would refuse that early, too.

My OB and I will talk about this at my next appointment on Friday. My EDD is January 26, but my MFM wants me induced no later than 39 weeks because of my history [which would put me delivering around January 19]. He mentioned earlier in my pregnancy that he may do a sweep if I make it past 39 weeks...but since I won't now, I don't think he'll do it.

  • Hmmm mine didn't say anything to me and I was 1cm dilated and 40 percent at 37 weeks. I think mine may do the stripping after 39 weeks but yeah 37 is early
  • My OB didn't plan on this but at my first cervical check at 37 weeks it basically happened and 3 hours later my water broke. I am absolutely in love with my early Christmas present, but I would have preferred that he cooked a little longer. You were right in telling your friend if might be too early.

  • With my first pregnancy my midwife did it at 37, 38 and 39 weeks. I had my daughter at 39 weeks 3 days. She told me that she could strip them but unless my body and baby were ready it wouldn't do anything. I didn't really know what all it was for and about then, it was kind of like "Do you want me to strip your membranes?" "Uhhhhh, sure?" But knowing what I know about it now and that your water could get accidentally broken and what not, I wouldn't do it at 37 or even 38 weeks. POSSIBLY 39 weeks.
