Christmas Menu

What is on your menu to make for Christmas?  We're hosting dinner on Christmas Day and I need a few more things to make but haven't found anything I'm dying to try.  Thanks!

Re: Christmas Menu

  • What are you already making? That will help me give you ideas :) I'm not making dinner - just charged with bringing an appetizer and I'm making bacon wrapped cocktail weenies.

It's a lot of Thanksgiving repeats, but here's ours. Apps: chips with onion dip and spinach dip, baked Brie with apples, a ham and pineapple cheese ball with crackers, and a fruit "tree" I saw on Pinterest. Dinner: turkey, ham, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, black pepper sugar snap peas, broccoli and cauliflower au gratin, corn, rolls, whole berry and jellied cranberries. Desserts: candy cane pie, pumpkin pie, cake pops, cookies. I'm most looking forward to the cheese ball, since I've never tried it before. ETA: forgot the Parmesan creamed spinach.
@hijoi What is this candy cane pie?  It sounds really good.
We are doing ham, mashed potatoes, corn casserole, black eyed peas and green bean casserole.
  • I'm not cooking, but my family is doing beef wellington and DH's family is doing lasagna. DH's family also has a tradition of serving caprese salad.

No idea what other stuff we'll have..probably roasted Brussels sprouts and shrimp cocktail.

  • We're hosting our first ever holiday! I'm not finished with the menu yet but so far we have honey baked ham, cheese potatoes, green bean casserole, corn, and rolls. MIL and my Mom are in charge of desserts. You can tell I'm not very creative.

Woops, that would have been helpful ;)  We are making steak with bacon/bourbon butter, green beans with cranberries and goat cheese, a spinach casserole thing, and rolls.  Also a cheeseball and shrimp cocktail for apps.  And so far a coconut cake for dessert.  That sounds like a lot but its more of a buffet style dinner.  I'm also making baked brie for Christmas Eve so I don't want to repeat that.

  • I'd add a starchy veg.

Everyone's menus look so yummy! We do cocktail style get togethers so I'm bringing my crockpot full of sweet-ish meatballs (you know, those ones with the chili sauce and grape jelly). They've been a staple in our family since I was 4 or 5.

Sounds yummy! If you want another appetizer bacon wrapped cocktail weenies are yummy or maybe just a veggie tray with dip would suffice. I'm not sure how many people you're serving but twice baked potatos are delicious - we are having those & prime rib Christmas Eve. Or you could do roasted red potatos - season with garlic and rosemary. Also I love to top steaks with sautéed mushrooms so you could add those. I would definitely add a potato of some kind though unless everyone in your family hates them! I'm making sugar cookie bars to take to various events if you want to add a dessert they are super easy to make - let me know if you want the recipie.

Do you mind sharing the bacon bourbon butter and green bean recipes? My brother just got home from basic training, and I let him choose what we are having for dinner and his only request was "steak and potatoes" so I'm trying to come up with some sides :) I'm doing a roasted califlower too. Maybe that would go well with your meal too?
Sure!  Here are the green beans: https://www.runningtothekitchen.com/2013/11/green-beans-cranberries-bacon-goat-cheese-2/

    Cauliflower is a good idea!

  • @cwm11985 here ya go! They are beyond addicting - be warned!

2-1/2 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour is fine)
    1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 cup butter, softened
    1 cup granulated sugar
    1 egg
    1-1/2 Tbsp. sour cream
    1 tsp. vanilla extract

    Frosting:
    1/2 cup butter, softened
    4 cups powdered sugar
    1/4 cup half and half
    1 tsp. vanilla
    Pinch of salt
Several drops of food coloring (optional)

    Directions:
COOKIES: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. (The longer you beat it, the fluffier your cookies will be.)
    Add egg and combine well.
Add sour cream and vanilla and mix until completely blended.
Slowly add the flour mixture and stir until well combined.
Gently press the batter into the greased baking dish and spread out with hands. (If you butter your hands, this will help with the stickiness.)
Bake 17-20 minutes, or until edges become lightly golden.
    Set aside to cool completely.
FROSTING: In a medium bowl, cream together butter, powdered sugar, and half and half until light and fluffy.
Stir in vanilla and salt, combine well.
Add food coloring until desired color.
Frost your cooled cookie bars evenly.
    Cut into squares and serve.

  • We're vegetarian so we don't eat a lot of the traditional stuff. I try a different dish every year. This year I will make butternut squah risotto with tiramisu for dessert.
