I found this on the December 2013 board last night and shared it on the fb group. Here it is for anybody that hasn't seen it. I can't believe this MIL!!
OMG!!! I'd be so pissed... I would not allow her near LO again, certainly never alone. It sounds like there is something wrong with her mentally. Not sure why they let her watch LO to begin with...
Mama of boys, Landon (Jan 14) and Harrison (Aug 15).
I hate to play Devil's advocate, but it is VERY possible that it is a cultural thing. There are several cultures in which piercing a newborn's ears is the norm and is something that has been done for years.
Although I fully agree that the MIL had no right to do this without the parents' consent, and I too would be PISSED if I was the baby's mom, I highly doubt this woman did it maliciously or is mentally ill.
That's f**ked up. I would not allow her to watch my child after that.
I'm worried this might happen to me too actually. I'm worried to come home one day and our baby's ears are pierced because its tradition in SO's culture and the culture in most families here in Hawaii.

This is true, but it still isn't the right of the MIL to do it without the parents' consent. That's the issue with this, not the cultural aspect.
My sisters and I all had our ears pierced around 6 months of age, so I don't have a problem with babies getting their ears pierced, but this situation was completely different, I think.

I completely agree with @HeartOverMind. The MIL didn't ask for permission or consent. Cultural rules aren't a factor here. This is not MIL's baby to make decisions on. I would tear into MIL like there is no tomorrow.
I hope you weren't expecting to have her be a regular babysitter, because it seems her judgment is really lacking AND she doesn't respect your role as the parents. This reminds me of another post where the new mom walked in on her MIL having the baby suckle her dry breast. Yuck.
Yeah, I saw this, and I was thinking that this was absolutely disturbing! Who does this??
@arya808 That is seriously disgusting. I don't care if you're my SO's mom or even my mom, I would ban them for life for seeing their grandchild if walked in on that.....

BFP#5 Praying for another rainbow in February!
I fully agree with what you are saying. That's why I mentioned that she had no right to do this without the parents' consent.
Point taken and as the mom, I too would be LIVID if my MIL did this to my daughter without consulting me first.
I just don't think the MIL was doing this to malicious.
