Bottle and spit up.

So my lo will be 4 weeks on Christmas and we tried her first bottle tonight. She spit up/threw up the entire thing. She has never been a big spit up baby, sometimes she spits up a little from bfing but this was crazy. Any suggestions on why this happened?? I used a tommee tippee with the slow flow nipple. Is it possible she ate too fast, just doesn't like the bottle, needs a slower flow? I really want to be able to use a bottle for a feeding or two a day but now I'm nervous.

Re: Bottle and spit up.

  • My LO did this the first time we tried a bottle. I think he gulped too much air so everything on top of an air bubble came right back up. I'm not an expert but that's my best guess

  • Try burping every 1/2 ounce to an ounce. She may have had too much air in her belly. Or as PP said, she could have eaten too much or too fast.

  • Was LO sitting near upright, and the bottle tilted just enough for the milk to fill the nipple but otherwise as flat as possible? That affects flow speed. We did our first bottle tonight also. DS dribbled a lot of it down his chin. And thenn even though I had pumped, I ended up BFing 15 min after he was supposedly done b/c he was squawking. I consider that a moderate success. Was your LO more or less hungry after she spit up?

  • She ate probably around an ounce, maybe a little less in about 3 minutes. We had her inclined although not at a sitting position and tried to have the nipple filled with milk to reduce air. It happened when I stopped to burp her and everything just came up but I definitely did not let her go too long or drink a lot without burping.
