Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If you've fed your baby meat from the table

I think DS could do something like ground beef, but I don't understand how babies his age are eating chicken or shredded beef.  That's not a flame - I'm just a fraidy cat and can't picture the meat-feeding going down any other way than with choking.

DS has 8 teeth and #s 9 and 10 on the way, but he really just sucks on food, mostly.  Does that somehow work for eating the chicken and beef?

Or are your babies chewing a bit more?  I always try to see if I can eat something only using my front teeth or sucking on it before I give it to him, and I can't figure out how to eat chicken or beef without using my back teeth.

Sorry.  I'm seriously baffled by this!

Re: If you've fed your baby meat from the table

  • I've given DS very small pieces of chicken before.  He makes chewing motions and they disappear, so he obviously does something with them.  They are essentially pieces of shredded chicken though--much smaller than anything I'd eat.

  • I've given DD tiny tiny pieces of chicken.  Kind of like shredded pieces- and olny one at a time.  DD doesn't really seem to interested in chewing- I think it is frustrating for her.
  • C just grinds it down with his gums - he only has 4 teeth.  He loves it and won't eat anything BUT table food at this point!
  • If your baby knows how to chew, he doesn't really need the teeth as his gums are incredibly strong.  DS has had chicken and ham and ate both without a problem.  As long as the meat is tender and in small pieces, it will pretty much fall apart in baby's mouth.  DS actually has a harder time with fresh fruits and veggies than he does with meat.

  • DD also has 10 teeth, and I wonder the same thing (I'm also scared).  For chicken, I cook a breast, then put it in the food processor.  I mix it with other stuff, because she isn't really a fan of it!

I'm interested to see the answers.

  • AJ is 11 months and only has 4 teeth. He's been eating meat since 10 months. I mash it up pretty good first, so he can "chew" it with his gums. He's pretty good at it.
  • We gave DS turkey on Thanksgiving for the first time. I just shredded it into small pieces. He chewed it and loved it! I have given him some ham too.
  • DS started with chicken and turkey around 8.5-9 months.  He had no teeth, but had an awesome rotary chewing motion.  He just chewed using his gums to mash whatever he was eating.  Even once they get teeth, they don't have molars, which are what we use to chew.  So honestly, it's not a big deal.

He's never had an issue chewing anything.  If your LO doesn't have a good chewing motion, maybe he's not ready.

  • DD has only two teeth and shredded chicken is probably one of her favorites. Remember that gagging and choking are two different things. DD will gag the first time she has things sometimes, but has never choked. I just make the pieces small enough that even if she did swallow them whole, she wouldn't choke.

  • DD gets super small pieces of meat and she gums them around her mouth for a minute and then they're gone, we haven't had any problems with choking
  • My guys have an issue with meats, even in the tiniest of pieces they end up on the inside of their cheek like they are saving it for later!  I did make them meatloaf using ground chicken, I added an egg yolk and a container of their stage 2 sweet potaoes. I did mix it very well so that it was smoother before I cooked it and they did ok with that, I have some frozen that I will try again in a few weeks.
  • My son eats chicken nuggets. I cut them into bite sized peices. I dont think he chews them all the way. He only has 6 teeth(4 on top and 2 on bottom). But he hasnt choked once and hes been on straight table foods since he was 7 months old.  They gum a lot of foods. He even had Steak last week and had no problems at all.
  • Chase has eaten just about everything we eat.  He loves chicken.  I cut little pieces for him and he mainly gums it.  He only has his front bottom two teeth and does a great job.  He had honey baked ham this weekend as well as shredded beef and we had no problems at all.  He's looking forward to ham on Christmas Eve and turkey on Christmas day!

Ditto. Teeth aren't a factor, they use their gums. DS eats meat and has no teeth. They don't chew with their front teeth anyway, only their molars which don't come in until much later.

  • My DS only has 3 teeth so far but i've been giving him meat all the time now. I usually put it in crockpot before i leave for work along with rice in it and when i get home 8 hrs later, it will be soft and fall off easily. In the beginning when we just started meat, i would blend it. I know it's nasty, but i rather have blend and not chocking him. now, i just put everything in crock pot for hours and when it's done it will be soft. Yesterday we had christmas party and i gave him ham. He didn't eat it. He just suck on it and then spit it out.

  • Ok...I'm thinking maybe I'll hold off because he really doesn't do much a chewing motion yet at all, so he wouldn't even be grinding it with his gums.  I'll give him a little ground beef or turkey next time we have that.

In the meantime...I think I'm going to look into recertification on infant CPR so I can clearly remember the Heimlich before we give him more substantial meat than that.

I know, I'm totally paranoid about this!

  • I've given it both pureed and in very small shredded bites.

They actually use a different technique other than the Heimlich on infants, but they'll cover it in your class if they cover choking management at all. It's actually a really good technique to know and something that made me feel better about the whole solids transition because I was pretty much afraid to give him anything at first.

  • We give chicken, turkey, ham, steak, you name it, he's had it.  We cut it up very small and he mows it down. Piggy.
  • Try chicken that is steamed like crazy so very mushy. Or shredded pork- DS also sortof sucks on meat- I only give him stuff that could basically be smalled whole (like mashed up meat- imagine something that already looks chewed. gross)
  • Quentin also has 8 teeth, and almost a molar as well. So far, I have given him some plain ground beef, turkey, and chicken. With the chicken and turkey, I cut it into the smallest pieces (smaller than .5 inch), and he mashes them with his tongue and chews it with his back gums until it is soft then he swallows. He hasn't had any issues with it yet (choking).

  • OMG- He has 8 teeth already?!?!?  My babies love to eat shredded chicken and they mash it with their 2 bottom teeth.
  • Yeah - his 4 bottoms are completely in and easily seen, two tops are the same way, and two more tops are through the gums but you have to look for them to see them.  It looks like his incisors are going to come in soon.

Yet he doesn't really chew so much as suck.
