Any IVF moms?

Hi ladies,

My husband and I just found out that he has a genetic condition (balanced translocation), which increases our chances of miscarriage to around 75% with each pregnancy. We've already had two early losses and at least one chemical pregnancy, so we are considering doing IVF with preimplantation genetic diagnosis. We are going to meet with our fertility doctor next week to discuss the option more.

I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this process locally and could give me an idea of cost? From my research it looks like my insurance won't pay for any of the IVF expenses, but might pay for the genetic screening. We are currently going to Fort Worth Fertility and seeing Dr. Elkins.

Thank you!

Re: Any IVF moms?

  • As Murphy's law would have it, I turned up pregnant the day after I finally broke down and asked my midwife for a fertility referral, but they *highly* recommended the Doodys (silly name, great practice, she said):

    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

  • I used the Fertility Specialists of Texas for IVF they have a discount program for people paying out of pocket. Even the Anesthesiologist they use has a discount for people paying cash. Good luck!

  • I'm not sure about the PGD cost at FW.IVF. I would suggest calling and asking for a price list. If the front desk girls can't help then ask to leave a message for Leesa. I was originally a patient of Dr. K but saw Dr. E on multiple occasions and really liked her.

  • @DoublePortion - Congrats on your pregnancy!! Did you go out of pocket? If so, do you mind giving me an estimate of how much the actual IVF and medicine cost? You can PM if you'd prefer. We are meeting with Dr. Elkins on Thursday, so I assume they'll go over costs or put us in touch with someone who can, just doing a little research before we go in.

    Thanks,
    Alyssa

  • Thanks @Dally101109! Yes, I am 100% OOP. I'll send you a PM with the costs, but mind you I did IVF with them in 2012 so the prices may have changed. (I'm using a clinic in Houston now.) They should give you a folder with tons of info. Also, just as an FYI Dr. E is PG, like about to pop. Just wanted to give you a chance to mentally prepare in case that is something you are sensitive to. ;)

  • @DoublePortion -- I got your PM, but the images didn't come through :(. Thanks for the warning. We actually noticed that when I went in for my hysteroscopy and it did kind of feel like a punch in the gut. When we consulted with her, she had really baggy scrubs on, so we didn't realize she was pregnant. Last visit it was pretty obvious. I guess her plans for maternity leave might effect our plans for IVF too, lol.

  • My husband is a balanced carrier, as well. Like yourself, we have a 75% chance of miscarriage due to unbalanced embryos. The IVF/ PGD process can be complex- depending on the type of translocation. My husband's balanced translocation is SO RARE that a member from RGI(Reproductive Genetic Institute) in Chicago has to fly down here for conversion and day 5 testing. Hopefully your situation is less complicated. I would highly recommend Dr. Douglas in Plano. He's a Reproductive Endocrinologist...one of the best! I start the IVF/PGD process on January 4th and hoping for egg retrieval around the 13-14th.

  • @KaciRoo84 - thank you for the recommendation, and I hope you get a little one from your IVF cycle! We met with our RE last week, and she said that with my husband's particular translocation the possibility of me carrying an unbalanced pregnancy past the 1st trimester is pretty much impossible. Based on that information and the fact that we don't have any IVF coverage we've decided to keep trying naturally for now. If we get to a point where we decide to consider IVF, I'll definitely look into Dr. Douglas.

  • I also went thru PGD and saw Dr. Goldstein at Fertility Specialists of Texas in Grapevine. He is the best and very caring! Cost wise they are very affordable and higly recommended.  We have researched a lot of clinics in the DFW area and they have a lot of experience with PGD. We asked another office about why somebody from RGI would have to come to the office and that is because the emb ryologist does not have experience with PGD biopsy so they bring somebody from the outside. We called RGI when we heard that.

Good luck to you. I would definatelyy sit down with Dr. G and understand their plan.
  • I saw Dr. Pinto at Repromed fertility center. He is amazing. I am currently 14 weeks pregnant with twins on our first round of IVF. ( We did do 2 rounds of IUI) I believe we paid around 13,000 for IVF. You have your office visit copays etc but I highly recommend Dr. Pinto- he is very good. We have had several friends use him.
