Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

clingy, is this normal?

My DS is 15 months today. We have been Bf since day 1 and I recently switched from a working role to a more SAH role. However, for many months now, my son seems to be VERY clingy.I'm ok with clingy on occasion, but just wondering if this is normal at this age?
He seems to be extra whiney/clingy when I am present, but not so much when I'm gone. I can be gone for hours, he will play and have fun with whoever is watching him, but as soon as I get home it's a constant whine feast unless i hold him. I can't even pass him off to daddy or he just cries. Is this normal at this age? TIA

Re: clingy, is this normal?

  • I think it's pretty common. My son is extremely clingy and whiney with me. I just figure it will pass with time but I know it drives my husband and family nuts.

  • My DD is still going through this at 21 months.  I don't think it has anything to do with SAH or working.  DH and I both work fulltime and she is with my mom during the day.  My mom keeps telling me it's because I breatfeed.  Ugh.
I find she is getting better as she gets older.

    Sorry.  Meant to say breastfeed

  • I'm pretty sure it's normal.  I SAH and DS goes through phases of super clingy.  He tends to do that when DH is home too, if we are all in the same space.  He wants to climb on/cling to me even though DH is trying to play with him.  If I am away in a different room or out doing an errand, DS is totally fine without me.

  • DD has her moments as well. I SAH. & she can be uber clingy with me off & on. With DH she isn't as much unless he's off work. Then she wasn't all of his attention.

It sounds normal. Almost all of them go through the mommy only stage.
  • My DS is 15 mos also and he is incredibly clingy.  He wants to be held and have me right next to him all of the time.  When he is with other family he is happy to be with them but it's like he's desperate to be with me.  I think it's just a phase that (I'm hoping!) will improve soon.  I love the snuggles with him but sometimes it's tough to listen to him cry just so I can go to the bathroom!
  • Thanks for all the replies ladies. I assumed it is just a phase, but just wanted to get some input. Thought maybe he was getting old for this behavior, but I guess not!
