Multiples

Todays appointment not what I expected.

Went in for my GD test and rhogam shot today.  I insisted on an ultrasound even though I wasn't scheduled for one (it was suppose to be next week) but I've been feeling off w/ sporadic contractions. Good thing I did because my cervix has shortened to 2.4. It was 3.9 three weeks ago. Thankfully there is no funneling. And the girls are both about 2 1/2 lbs. My doc hooked me up to the monitor and I'm having a few contractions but nothing major yet. I said "That's good right! Surely I can get at least 6 more weeks right?"  With a dead pan look he said "Not likely"  He is consulting with the fellow doctors to see about suppositories and possibly when/if I should get a steroid shot.
I was sent home after being there 3 hours with strict instructions to lay down for the next few days. Now I'm freaking out a little bit inside. Everything was looking so good. I know things can change in the blink of an eye but we all know "it wont happen to us".
I forgot to ask if it was too early for a FFN test or if it would be helpful. Do you think I should ask about this when he calls back today if he doesn't mention it? I know I have a bit of cervix left and can hang out like this for weeks but I'm just scared things will progress quicker than anticipated and in two weeks there wont be anything left.
( 28 weeks- 3 days for mobile bumpers)

  • Take the bedrest very seriously. I had a great cervical length at 27w3d and was 3cm dilated at 28w1d. For some reason 28w is a big turning point in a lot of twin pregnancies it seems. It's great that you're not dilated. I would suggest being proactive and asking for a med, like procardia, to stop contractions. Good luck!

  • I am taking the bed rest seriously. I just can't wrap my brain around the fact that my babies could be here so much sooner than I ever thought. Instead of 37 weeks my new goal is 34 weeks. Bed rest would be so much easier if I didn't already have 3 kids at home. *Sigh*
    :(
  • Do you have any way to get help at home for the next month? Someone who can bring over or come over to cook meals? Someone who can pop in to do laundry and dishes? someone to get kids ready for school or whatnot? Bed rest means IN BED. No getting up and tending to children every few hours...

  • Take it easy! I was put on MBR when I was around 27w with a shortened cervix and funneling. I was on procardia and made it to 36w2d.

Like pp said, if you have help - take it! I had 2 @ home while on BR & it's hard to stay down!

That's the thing we have no one. My husband works 80+ hours a week and our closest relatives live 5 hours away and are not willing to come help. We moved to a new town last year and don't have friendly neighbors. My best friend is in the process of moving her family half way across the state and our old next door neighbors (pseudo family) leaves for warmer weather in a few days for the next 6 months.  My family is of no help, they live 1000 miles away.
You know, when we announced it was twins we had tons of people say "Oh whatever we can do to help just let us know!" and now that we need real help. Magically no one is available. Why do people do that?
  • I'm sorry it's so scary but you are getting closer, definitely need to take it easy.
How are you doing? I've been following your posts. Last I heard you're going on hospital bed rest next week. Good luck!
  • I'm sorry you're facing some potential complications.  However, from what I know it is not completely abnormal for your cervix to start shortening in the 3rd trimester, especially with twins.  I hope your able to rest and get your feet up as much as possible. Pay close attention to your body.  If you start contracting regularly call and/or go in immediately.  Thankfully with modern medicine there's many things they can do to stop PTL.  It's not too early for the FFN but it's not a great diagnostic tool.
  • My cervix was closer to 2cm at 26 weeks, but my MFM stopped measuring at 28 weeks because he said it's not a predictor of preterm labor after that point. I made it to 36 weeks 6 days with no interventions other than progesterone suppositories. I was on modified bed rest but that's pretty much de facto at that point in a twin pregnancy :) Good luck!

  • I don't want to be too forward, but would you be comfortable sharing what city you're in? I know the chances of having one of us in your area is small, but if any one of us would be able to help, I'm sure some would love to.
