Totally NBR: documentary Blackfish

So I watched "blackfish" last night on netflix and I thought it was really interesting. And sad. I totally recommend watching it!

I always thought id take my sons to Sea World someday...I've never been! But now I'm not too sure.

Re: Totally NBR: documentary Blackfish

  • I have not seen it yet but I have seen the Cove which is also a powerful documentary about marine life in captivity. When we went to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago I had mixed feelings. I wondered if the animals were truly happy but at the same time it was amazing to see them up close.

  • I watched it last night and it completely broke my heart. Especially the part about taking the baby away and the mom morning the loss. We will not be going to sea world, any marine life LO sees will be in the wild!

  • We just watched it last night! I agree with you...I don't think we will ever take lo because I do not support what they do. I can't believe they are still in business after so many people being injured/attacked by the whales. Those whales need to be set free. I thought the one specific baby whale that was separated from his mom was the saddest part!!

  • I've seen it before and it's so sad. They need to be released in an open ocean pen. I don't see how sea world can continue to operate when now everyone knows that the whales they have were from an illegal seizure. I used to go to sea world all the time as a child but I won't go anymore and I won't have my kids going, either.

  • I have seen it. I live orlando so the story of Dawn still is in my memory. I do not 100% agree with what they doing in the parks, but I also see the good they do in saving local wildlife. It's a tough decision for me.

  • I am so glad it is finally on Netflix! I have been waiting to see it.

You know I find it really incredible how Sea World can bring into captivity an animal that is both one of the most intelligent in the world and also one of the most, if not the most, powerful predators in the world, and then run around singing this tune that there isn't an aggressive bone in their bodies. Furthermore they like to claim they are doing the animals a service. How they can still claim that Tilikum wasn't acting out of frustration and aggression is beyond me. You would never get away with that excuse for any other animal, including humans.

Also, with the incident in 2006 with Kasatka and Ken Peters, I think the documentary didn't mention a key factor, which was that Kasatka was away from her two year old calf for the show and the calf became agitated and was heard calling for her mother seconds before Kasatka grabbed Peter's foot.

Orca in captivity is something that has long disturbed me and I am glad that this documentary is out there.

The money Sea World puts towards saving local wildlife seems to me like a tobacco company putting money towards anti-tobacco campaigns. I don't believe they would do it if it wasn't good PR.

They aren't saving the whales, not by a long shot. Smaller stuff, fish maybe, ok.

  • They have a huge manatee, dolphin, and turtle rescue. They do rehabilitate and release whales, but smaller whales. I do not agree with keeping them and breeding them. Many of Sea worlds whales cannot be released as they were born in captivity. While I enjoy seeing them, I would rather do it in the wild.

At this point, I'm so disillusioned I'm like...

  • Andplusso, just because they do one thing right doesn't give them a free pass to be assholes about everything else.

  • I agree with that point

  • My heart broke for Tilikum. :(. When they said he didn't move for 3 days and is pretty much just stays alone in that tank. Not cool. :(

Yup. Let's face it, everyone goes to sea world for the killer whales and "shamu".

Even if they are fantastic at turtle rescue they should treat their meal ticket far better. Or really, after seeing the documentary, not have them at all. I was really disturbed by the whole thing. Not sure why I was so surprised...they aren't a non profit like a zoo. First and foremost they are a business, so I really shouldn't have been so shocked.

  • And how beat up he gets, stuck in solitary, its heartbreaking.

  • Poor Tilly has always been alone...They have always said the female orca's pick on him, so he cannot be with others. To make it worse, the one female companion he did have, died shortly after the Dawn incident. I have been to SW many times, and Tilly always looks depressed. I think at this point, the best thing to do would be to humanely euthanize him. He is a beautiful creature who was ripped away from all he knew

Or put him in an ocean pen with all of his kids. They know their own.
    Geez kill him?? Really?

  • They said he would not survive in an ocean pen...he has no teeth anymore, and has to be hand fed. They believe he can no longer survive on his own. I don't want to see him die....I just know what I have read.

As a counterpoint, I saw this making the rounds on FB....a take on the whole movie by a former SW employee..

  • I saw it when it came on CNN. It was very sad. I had no idea things were like that, nor that any handlers died.

She has absolutely no credentials. She could be a ride operator for all I know.
I googled, she went from being a manager at petco to working with the turtles at sea world. Consider me far from impressed at her take on whales.

That looks like a large dose of Sea World propaganda if you ask me.  I don't believe any of that for a second.
