April 2014 Moms

Breast Pump PSA

Went to go look at my breast pump options today.  Our insurance covers the purchase of one, however, we can't order it until 3 months before delivery.  The lady at the medical supply store told me that things were changing in 2014.  Right now most insurance companies cover the whole pump, and all the accessories that go with it.  In 2014 they created regulations so insurance companies will only cover the actual pump, and you'll be responsible for purchasing everything that goes with it. She called it a "Build your own pump" system  Tubes, bottles, and whatever else goes with it will all be sold separately.  She told me to get my prescription from my Dr. ASAP and she'll fill my order since they only have 60 all inclusive packages left.  Once they run out they won't get anymore.  Lucky for me I have an appt. on Thursday so we can get my order in, and she'll bill my insurance company later.  I know it's last minute, and there isn't much time left in 2013, and some companies may still be doing things differently but I figured I would throw this info out there in case anyone wanted to look into it before 2014!

  • Mine has to be a maximum of one month before delivery. I have all my paperwork in and stuff ordered, but they won't ship it until March.
  • I actually just ordered mine today (no particular reason why I did it today, just because) and besides being backordered by a week, I should get it shortly.  I didnt realize the laws were changing, glad I did it!  I got the Medela Personal Double Electric Breast Pump all for $0.  I did indeed need a Rx from my doctor's office to send to the medical supply company, and they were kind enough to process it right away and im all set to go.

  • i'm actually just researching this same thing today!  my insurance company covers breast pumps but i need to provide a letter from my OB first, and i have to get the pump through a medical supply store.  not sure how the insurance might change for 2014, but i'm just planning on donating whatever i get to my local pregnancy shelter anyway.
  • If anyone is interested, zulily has a tommee tippee double electric breast pump for $99. For those whose insurance doesn't cover it, for whatever reason.
  • I wonder how this affects my insurance if it was already covered. Apparently it's been covered electively by our company on our insurance for years. I called last week and the lady made no mention of any changes. Hmmm...

Not sure- I've heard tommee tippee is a good brand and just saw the pump on zulily. I'm a FTM so no experience with pumps. I know $99 is a good price for a double electric though!

i would avoid that purchase.  check out the reviews:

medela is expensive for a reason - it WORKS!!  pump in style OR freestyle are what i always recommend.  i own the freestyle and love it.  best $250 i spent as a new mom.

That's how our insurance was. It's always been covered, but in order for the companies to not go belly up because of the laws passed earlier this year or last??? They will only cover the pump and not accessories. I have not yet contacted our insurance company to double check, this is just what the lady at the store said. It's one of three stores our insurance works with. I'll be making a call to insurance Thursday just to double check. However I think I'm in the clear since she is holding an "all inclusive" for me!

  • Couldn't get in touch with any of the suppliers. People must be rushing to get their home care supplies. Will try again next week.
  • Hmm... I'll have to look into this- thanks for the heads up. As of the last time I called my insurance they directed me to the medical supply place and I could get an Ameda 100% covered. I'll be calling to see if there's a change coming.

  • I am 100% certain insurance companies aren't going belly up over breast pumps or supplies. Even if they gave everywoman they covered a pump with all the goodies they'd be alright.

I think she was saying the breast pump companies. But I thought to myself, they are still getting the money from the insurance companies so how does it matter?? Oh well, even if she was wrong I figured I would pass along the info I got just in case so no one gets screwed over!

  • Yeah that doesn't make any sense. Breast pump companies are making money off of this, not losing it. (I'm know you're not the one making that claim, so don't feel like that's directed at you!). I also wonder if its state specific.

  • I got mine this week medela freestyle. My insurance covered 80% of the basic and I had to pay the difference so it cost me about $120. I got mine now because my deducatable is met. The medical supply store never even asked when my due date was. Just needed a prescription from the my dr.

  • Did any of you have trouble locating a med supply store that has breast pumps? I've looked up all of the stores in my area, but none show breast pumps. (Tons of diabetic supplies, wheelchairs,etc..) my insurance will pay $150 towards anything from a med supply store with a prescription. I have the Rx. I just need to find a store! (Austin, TX, btw)

  • I had a medals single and couldn't stand it. Last year the day after Christmas Target had a huge sale and I got a $300 avent double electric for $120. I live in a very humid environment and while the Medela would get mold in the tubes, the avent doesn't allow ANY moisture in the tubes and the milk has 0% chance of being sucked up into the tubes (a problem I had with my Medela). Anyway I'd give the avent 10/10. I know tricare is not covering breast pumps for any of you military families so I would check the after Christmas sales!

  • Also, you may want to double check it's covered AFTER your deductible is met, otherwise if you have a high deductible, you would probably be better off getting it on sale at a store or online...Mine was after deductible, and I got it in Oct so it had already been met :)

I got my pump through here, and just called the main number at the bottom to double check on the process, don't bother calling Ron, its a slower process.  FYI, I did pay $50 out of pocket for the Medela Advance, and so I wouldn't have to wait until a week after deliver which is when they send the standard ones, but it came with the pump, 3 ice packs, cooler, 4 bottles, and all the parts.
