Passing gas or pooping during labor

Im 35 weeks Monday and a thought keeps running through my mind..... will i poop or toot everyone out of the delivery room??!! I know it can be common and I know i shouldn't even worry about this but OMG I can't help it. To make it worse I have been so gassy my entire pregnancy..So who else is with my on this??

If you do they will not care. Whatever you do just think they've seen worse. As a mom we change diapers daily it's no big deal. Nurses at l&d see it daily. To them it's no big deal

I think most of the time, your body will recognize that it's in labor and try to void your system before you get to that point. And like PP said, they've totally seen worse, so try not to fret.

Many (if not most) women poop during labor. Don't worry about it. Poop happens.

My midwife says easily 90% of women poop in labour. It's no big deal and I likely won't notice and won't care at that point. Especially if they've been allowed to continue to eat and drink during labour (which she is an advocate of and I plan to do).

Lol! During my last labor, this happened. I was dilated to 8 and I kept feeling like I had to poo and I told my midwives. They just kept telling me it was likely the baby coming down, and the pressure I was feeling was from his head. Finally I got off the bed and walked into the bathroom and pooped. It was horrible. My contractions were coming one right after another and sitting on the toilet made it even worse. When I was close to delivery, I was on my hands and knees, sort of pushing to see if baby was ready to move down yet, and every time I would do that, I would crap. My midwife kept wiping my crack every time, and in between contractions, I'd whisper, "I'm so sorry. I know it's gross." She just kept reassuring me that it wasn't a big deal. There isn't anything that can be done, anyway. I've heard women say when you're in that much pain, you lose your sense of modesty, and everything that would normally be embarrassing, isn't. Not the case for me. But you just have to roll with it. It happens. But once baby is in your arms, it doesn't even register anymore. It's all worth it!

I pooped multiple times AND DH even wiped my butt for me. I had zero clue any if that was going on. I was too concerned about pushing a small human out of my vagina.

You won't care and neither will anyone else. They see it all the time and are totally equipped to handle it

It's embarrassing to think about, but as PPs mentioned it doesn't really matter and you will likely not care in the moment. It's just another one of those things that comes with the territory and most L&D nurses and OB/midwife teams are very fast and discreet about cleaning up anything that happens.

Unless you actually see it (I unfortunately did with DD since I had asked for a mirror to watch her be born) you may not even know if it does end up happening.

No big deal. I was somewhat worried about this the first time, but did not happen. If it happens it does and there is nothing you can do about it. You just need to worry about getting your LO out safely so I wouldn't worry about it.

I was nervous about that too but just like everyone else is saying, the nurses don't care and YOU won't care while you're pushing that baby out.

I was so worried about this the first time. I knew I was gassy and was afraid of pooping...guess what? I pushed for 2 1/2 hours...I swear because I was half ass pushing at the beginning out of fear of embarrassment. That was sooooooo hard and recovery was a bitch. This time around I don't even care! This kid is coming out stat even if that means crapping all over the table!

No one will care. You probably won't even notice and if you do I doubt you will care either. A lot of hospitals offer an enema once you are there and that will help with the pooping thing if you decide to do it.

i don't know if i pooped while pushing, but if i did, no one told me. lol. but i will say, i was passing gas the whole time i was laboring. my husband and i laughed and laughed about this like a couple of 10 year olds.

also, i do think i peed myself. i had an epidural so i couldn't really feel it when it happened. i just felt wet and let everyone know i was leaking. the nurse said she thought it was amniotic fluid leaking. but my water broke several hours before. so looking back, i'm quite sure i wet the bed. lol.

Well I guess I'm in the minority here but my body completely expelled everything from my intestines like Niagra Falls shortly after my water broke. It was like 2 years worth of poop came out. I was really lucky I was still at home and not on the way to the hospital yet! I used a mirror to watch my pushing progress and did not pee or poop during the hour I pushed (9 hours after everything came out at home.) I am hoping the same thing happens this time around, but honestly I don't really care either way. Don't worry about it! You'll be too focused on that beautiful baby to "give a crap." Heh heh.

If you had an epi they should have given you a catheter. Anyway I probably pooped 10 times with both kids. Oh well.

Yeah no. If you had an epidural you had a catheter so there is no way that you peed your bed. It was your water. Mine broke at the hospital and it was seriously leaking out in small gushes for hours.

I don't think I pooped during the pushing and I Was pretty aware of what was happening... Buti wouldn't have cared. I had two nurses, two nursing students, and my husband staring at my gaping vag that probably had the patchiest shave job ever and a baby's head was emerging. What's a little poo? ;-)
