We have a date!!!

So excited and just had to share the news!! I went in for my bi-weekly NST and they decided to do an U/S to check on baby's size since he/she has been measuring so big.  Well baby is measuring 8 lbs 13oz… She said the machine is sometimes off by about 1/2 a pound, but in two weeks when I hit 38 the baby will most likely be at least 9 lbs and a few oz… apparently my body doesn't seem capable of pushing that out and the shoulders worry her.. So she scheduled us for a section on Jan. 6th! I will be 38 weeks! I am so excited and I can't wait to meet this little peanut! And find out if we have a boy or a girl!!! Had to share the news! I'm so excited!!

  • I've been on here since I found out I was pregnant… I may not comment or post all day every day, but I was excited and thought I would share.  No need to be so rude and ugly.
  • Is that the only reason for the section based on size?

  • Congrats on the set date!! That's exciting
  • I've had very slight high BP… high being 140/80 so I was put on bed rest.. it tends to hang around 125/76 at home. I guess she just doesn't want to take chances. But her main reason is the size.
  • I have been told by L&D nurses and one doctor that size is not an acceptable reason to induce before 40 weeks. Ultrasounds can be off by a couple of pounds and estimated date of conception can be off by as much as 2 weeks. Some babies induced at 38 weeks are actually 36 week preemies. I'm sure your doctor knows what he/she is doing but it wouldn't hurt to question the induction at 38 weeks.

This, again. I'm getting sick of every other person posting about how BIG their baby is going to be when ultrasounds are not an exact science and most doctors will tell you this.

  • Yeah, my doctor told me that their machines are usually about 1/2 lb off… Her biggest thing is she doesn't think my body type will be capable of pushing a larger baby and she doesn't want to take chances… the high BP doesn't help either. I trust her opinion. She's the doctor, not me.
  • OUr little man measured 8lb 15 oz today at his ultra sound!!! The doctor pretty much said to be ready for him anytime! I am almost 37 weeks... but I am hoping by the end of next week! :):):) time will tell
  • My SIL just went through this exact scenario. They scheduled a c section because they thought she was going to have a 10lb+ baby and were concerned a about shoulder dystocia. He was 8lb 4oz at birth...I would decline induction or c section based on size alone after seeing this situation play out.

Second opinion would be appropriate in this scenario.

  • I would get a second opinion. Doctors are not supposed to induce before 39 weeks unless there is a medical emergency. Size is not considered an emergency according to AMA and ACOG. It won't hurt to ask your doctor to wait a week or to get a second opinion. I don't mean to scare you! I just think we always need to question and be aware. https://www.childbirthconnection.org/article.asp?ck=10651

  • I am all for c sections ifnthe medical reason is legit, which if the doc thinks the baby won't fit with your body type/high BP then kudos and good luck!
BUT I would question my doc about why 38 week? Mine won't schedule until 39 if its non emergency. Just something to consider. Good luck!
  • I would be getting a second opinion if my care provider told me I had to have a c-section without a trial by labour in your situation.  It's very rare that a woman's pelvic dimensions cannot handle birthing an average sized baby.  Unless there has been a pelvic injury or deformity, birthing a 'larger' baby is just a matter of the OB/midwife knowing what positions open up the pelvis to the largest dimension.

Please don't have a c/s based on an u/s that estimated your baby might be 9lbs at 38w.  You'll go on to have a c/s and deliver a 7lb baby.  For sure.  Or guess what?  You ARE capable of delivering a 9lb baby if it happens that way.

At least try for an induction first.  Holy hell.

    Sincerely,
A mom of three 9+ pound babies all born 1-2 weeks early
Omg my vajajay hurts for you...you deserve a trophy lady!!

  • I can see why your doctor is concerned because my friend had to do an unplanned c/s when they realized that her baby got stuck in her hips during labor. But 38 weeks is a little early to have it scheduled, most doctors do it after 39 weeks because like PPs mentioned that your due date might be wrong.

  • C sections suck. I would try everything possible to avoid one. I think the other ladies are right that you should get a second opinion. Elective surgery when you will be taking care of a new born sounds no fun.

If your baby is measuring that big and they're planning a c-section anyway, why wouldn't they just wait until 39 weeks when LO is full-term? I would be really upset if my baby wasn't full-term yet and I was being told to schedule an early c-section for size.
This, exactly. The reason for my tone the first time was mainly based on my confusion why you would take the baby out any earlier if size and slightly elevated BP were the only concerns. In GD cases it is different- but given you're good to go aside from those two things (and baby size is definitely not a good or accurate indicator), then I would absolutely be questioning her- regardless of credentials.

I call bull shit. I work in l and d and I see this happen and its not right. You can refuse anything your dr suggests. No reason u have to opt for a section

@Roses87 I know you work in L&D and hoped you would comment on this! EDIT: Also, if her doctor is adamant on c-section, then why not do it at 40 weeks or later since vaginal delivery of a large baby would be moot...? 38 weeks is so risky.

  • I've had 2 close friends be induced at 39 weeks because their babies were "measuring" at or over 9 lbs. Both had 6lb babies. There is no way I'd have a c section based on a growth scan and with only one opinion. Especially not before 39 weeks.

  • Why would you want to have a c/s if you didn't have to?  And you really don't know that you need to.  Seems a tad bit silly to me.  I'd get a second opinion.

  • I second pretty much everything said here. Let's assume the ultrasound is accurate. 38 weeks is still not full term. And if LO is too big to push out at 38 weeks, he's still going to be too big at 39+ weeks, but now the lungs will be more mature, in addition to all the rest of the organs. But, you say you trust your doctor. I suggest you begin to trust yourself and your body and all that you are capable of, including a vaginal birth.

  • This is just dumb. Sorry OP but find a brain cell.
