3rd Trimester

Swelling in hands only...

I noticed that my hands have begun to swell a little but no where else really. I know that swelling can come on later in pregnancy, but isn't it usually all over? I am 35 weeks and a FTM so this is all new and I hate the fact that I will have to take my rings off but know it's better to do it now than wait and have to potentially cut them off. Has anyone else experienced area specific swelling like this?

Re: Swelling in hands only...

  • I just started to swell in only my hands last week (35 weeks). My blood pressure is fine and everything else looks good, so I'm assuming its normal as my doctor didn't seem concerned.

  • During my last pregnancy, my hands swelled the most. My ankles and feet swelled a little but that primarily happened after walking too much.

  • I'm 32 weeks and I've had swelling in hands and feet- I say feet but it's mainly in one foot rather than both! Not so great to be wearing sandals this side of Christmas! Xx
  • My first pregnancy, I had swelling early on in mostly my legs. My hands I never felt like they were swollen with pressure, but I did have to take my rings off. I had to get my feet up as much as I could.

This time, it has been my hands & forearms pretty bad, causing carpal tunnel these last several weeks for me. I was wondering why my legs were not like they were last time, but that has come up now over this last week or so.

So it can really vary. It still might come up for you later, unfortunatly. Hoping it doesn't get worse for you!

My hands have swollen a lot, as have my feet. How is your blood pressure? I would mention that only your hands are swelling at your next OB appointment. While its likely nothing, it could be a sign of blood pressure issues.
  • So I am only 27 weeks and I'm at the point my rings are gettin way to tight to wear so I have them around my neck. Is it possible I gained too much weight too early on hence why they don't fit instead of swelling due to other issues? I'll have another week till I see my doc. I had pre e last time around but I am thinking I probably gained too much too early on and that could be why I hope

  • I just started having this symptom at 32 weeks...
  • I am 30 weeks and I've been waking up with swollen hands but attribute it to keeping them in one position most of the night.  After 30 minutes or so of being awake and moving about, the swelling goes down.  Taking my rings off at night definitely helps!
  • Yep. I have big fat man hands right now. No other swelling. I went to Walmart and bought a cheap ring to wear in place of my wedding set. When I let my hands hang at my sides I can feel the blood rush into them. Blood pressure is normal.
  • I've had severe swelling and I bought a wrist guard that I wear when I sleep that has made a world of difference.
