LO losing weight.

We just took LO to the doctor today to get her ears checked on because she had a ear infection, good news was that her ears look great. Bad news is that she lost 5 oz over a period of two weeks.

She will be five months on Christmas. She's EBF and went from being 14lbs 2 oz to 13 lbs 13 oz. The doctor recommended we start solids but I really don't want to until she is a little older and I don't really think that is going to help with her gaining to much because I think she would probably just spit it all out but who knows. I know some of you have gone through this so is there any advice you could give me to help her gain some weight?

I also started dieting so I don't know if that's effected anything but any advice would be helpful. TIA

Eta also to add it's been a nightmare to get LO to nurse. She fusses and crys and is not happy but the pedi said she looked great. I'm just at a loss. Ugh :((

Re: LO losing weight.

  • I've heard of women whose supply tanks when they start reducing their calories.. Have you pumped at all? Just to see if you are still pumping about the same? This may not be the same situation? But our LO dropped 6 ounces in a week .. And I'm convinced it was bc when he got weighed the first time, he hadn't pooped in a few days... He pooped 3 times that day! Worth maybe thinking about :-)

That's all I have... My LO is off the growth chart bc he's so tiny, so Im with ya and I hope the scale doesn't go down anymore for you !

  • @NikkiD522 I haven't pumped lately because LO won't take a bottle anymore but I think I'm going to up my calorie intake and see if that might help. Also I didn't even think of the poop thing. LO was on amoxicillin and it gave her terrible diarrhea. She was popping like 10 times a day. It's finally calmed down so hopefully that was the problem. Thank you! I wouldn't of even thought of that.
  • How often does she eat? Do you feel like she's getting a full feeding? Maybe offer the boob more often?

And I def think the pooping frequency could have influenced things.

  • @carrotcake06 I offer her the breast like every half hour to an hour at home because while she is nursing she either is fussing or gets distracted easily or wants to look at me. I have tried everything and I have started having to nurse her in a dark room to get her to nurse longer than a couple minutes and so she doesn't get distracted. But yeah now that I think about the frequency that she was pooping, that makes sense now.
  • I'm convinced sometimes those diapers weigh a solid pound....

Good luck!! I hope that's the case!!

  • @KatieS7 that's what I've been trying the last couple days and it helps a little but she still looks up at me like every 30 seconds. I will just have to keep at it and try different things and I thought the same thing when the dr talked about introducing solids.

I hope your LO starts gaining back weight too!!
