first outing

how old was your LO when you went to your first non-doctor appointment outing? where did you go? did you NIP?  did it go well?

I'm trying to adjust my expectations...

Re: first outing

  • I think we went out after a week. It went well, she slep the entire time. I think we went to target and then out to lunch. I didn't NIP. I usually wont NIP because she likes to be in a certain position or she will latch and unlatch a dozen times. Then get very frustrated.
I go out once a week and I bring her with me. She sleeps through most trips.

  • We did really short trips, like 1hour round trip or less, at first and I only would go right after nursing.

First places out were Target and grocery store.

Yesterday we went out for 6 hours! I NIP'd at the salon where I was getting my bangs trimmed. It was a friendly environment and my friend/stylist was very encouraging.

  • We took LO to ikea at 3 days old. Our DS asked to go and since he had been really stressed with me being in the hospital, we knew he needed a little more attention. Our DD slept the whole time, covered in a car seat, and nursed when we got home.
  • I'm not even sure to be honest.

But they were like three days old.

I never understood why women say

"I'm not going anywhere until six weeks."

I wanted to go out right away, but DD is SO unpredictable!  She normally cluster feeds starting around 3/4 pm, but today we decided to start at 11, we've been eating for 2.5 hrs so far.  She has not taken more than a 5 min break!

I'd love to go out, but I'm so afraid of getting stuck somewhere with a hungry baby, who just wants to nurse for hours!

2 weeks old and it was Target.

    I've since gone all over.

I had to NIP at the car dealer. I was getting my brakes done and was there for 2 hours. I just tossed a light blanket over my shoulder and positioned him. If I showed a little nipple, no big deal. He slept for most of the time. I figured if I was bothering anyone, they'd get my car done faster.

  • We stopped at Target on the way home from the hospital, lol. After that he was ~ 8 days old when I took him to a friend's house for her 3yo's birthday party. He slept the entire time. I haven't NIP yet, though, because he's a puker and I'd rather not have to change my clothes if he throws up all over me. It's easier to manage the spit up when I bottle feed.

  • 4 days, we went to DH's police academy graduation. I fed her before we left but I did have to NIP. It was scary but I realized a few minutes into it no one was looking at me. I try to schedule our outings around her feeding, but I still NIP frequently.
  • Target at 4 days old to get smaller diapers and other things or him that we didn't have (he was born 3.5 weeks early and tiny and so we weren't entirely prepared!)
  • I think DD was about a week and a half old and we went to the mall to get out of the house and do a little Christmas shopping. We left the house right after she nursed and we were home after two hours. She slept the entire time so I didn't need to NIP. I have nursed in public (kind of) at several family events and DH's work Christmas party. But other than that I haven't had to nurse at a store or anything yet.

  • I brought lo to my job to open him up a savings account when he was a month old after his pedi appointment. Then we went Xmas shopping at dicks and Yankee candle. I changed his diaper and nurses him in the car, little cramped but not that bad, not ready to nip yet.
  • About a week. After the doctor, we did a little shopping at Hallmark and a baby boutique. Now we go out for 2-3 hours a few days a week. No other way I could stay sane!

  • We went out at about 2 weeks and have gone to several stores since. I keep LO covered in his car seat while in the stores and no one even bothers us. When they can't see the baby people don't seem to bother you while shopping or at least in my experience. We go to both grandparents house regularly and no issues.
  • I've taken lo out at 1 week and have lately been out everywhere. I pump and supplement and have fed her on a bench at the mall but she mostly sleeps during our excursions. I keep her covered whether I'm wearing her or she's in her stroller. She had a meltdown at the mall once but it wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be.

  • That's a tad different, if she is going that long.
  • We went to Target when LO was 2 days old. I'm much more ambitious the second time around. I go lots of places alone with both my kids. DD is 3. And I nurse in public anywhere I need to. No one ever says anything or stares. Nothing. In fact I've just had people come up to me and show me pics of their kids/grandkids after they saw me BFing. All positive things here.
  • I went to the market when LO was 4 days old. I wish I had though the trip thru more and brought his front carrier because after i got there and put his carseat in the cart I had no where to put food! It was deff a little stressful. We got the essentials and went home
  • My LO's first outings have been this week; she is 3wks old. We had a couple drives while I did some sight seeing w my dad who is in town visiting. Then today I took her to BRU and a restaurant for lunch. We just kept her in the car seat and had a blanket covering her.

  • I'm in the minority...just took LO to see his great Gma at 3.5 weeks and don't plan on getting out again anytime soon. All Christmas family get togethers are at my house this year and we are skipping the extended family parties.
  • I took our first solo outing (sans DH) with baby to King Soopers at 5 weeks old for maybe an hour. The only casualty was the Candy Cane light at the end of our drive way that I backed over with the car! Needless to say, I called our little trip a success!
  • Woohoo! I did it! It met up with some women from my Bradley class for about 2 hours at a coffee shop. I successfully NIP'ed, and no melt-downs from L (until we got in the car to go home. Poor girl hates car rides :( ). But everyone survived! :-D
