Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

14 month old sudden bedtime regression? (Long, sorry.)

DS will be 14 months on the 2nd. He's gone to bed perfectly for ...soooo long. He's been off the bedtime bottle for two weeks now. The first three nights were rough but after that he went down just like he used to. Last night when i put him to bed he wouldn't stop crying. After we read three books and I turned he lights out he just started crying to the point of almost hyperventilating. I usually sit in e rocking chair with his head on my shoulder. He wasn't having it. He was pushing himself away from me and wanted to sit on my lap facing out wards. I tried standing up and putting his head on my shoulder but he pushed away like that too. I tried laying him down thinking rubbing his back would help calm him down (usually does), but he wouldn't even stay laid down. I left the room for 15 minutes and put his little sister to bed then went back in. In he past if he's cried for a few minutes alone in his room he will calm right down when I go back in and pick him up. Not last night. Still more of the same. There was nothing I could do to calm him down so I sadly left his room. 45 minutes from when I turned his lights out, he fell asleep. An hour later he let out one big cry and went back to sleep for the rest of the night. I thought maybe he had a tummy ache. Tonight he did the same thing, though. He pushed himself away from me when I was holding him and I couldn't calm him down. Tonight it only took 20 minutes for him to fall asleep. What gives? I hate hearing him cry so heavy and end up crying himself to sleep. I hate not being able to comfort or calm him. Has anyone else encountered this? Sorry it's long.

  • Sometimes our LO will do this if she's not quite tired enough for bed yet. We'll often let her hang out with us for a bit and then give it another shot in a half hour or so.

  • Thanks for your response! DS is rubbing his eyes while doing this, though. :( Since it was a shorter episode tonight I'm hoping it's a phase and will wear off night by night.....

  • DS got to a point where he didn't want us holding him anymore before he went to bed. He would whine, fight, push off and once I put him in his bed he would fuss for a few minutes then settle down and go to sleep. Maybe they just need their space?

Ditto this. I rarely get bedtime cuddles anymore.
  • Thanks gals! I was a little worried when someone mentioned ear infection. A friend of mine had a DS that had horrible ear infections and was just miserable. I would hate to have my DS have to go through that. :( Luckily, tonight he was back to his old self. Or maybe we just rocked out to Pandora enough to wear him out. Before we even finished Goodnight Moon (book 3 of 3 for our bedtime routine), he was nuzzling into my sweatshirt with half-closed eyes. After I turned the light off he fella sleep on my shoulder and then stayed asleep/calm when I laid him down. Phew. Maybe it was just a short phase. I did think of one thing that had changed that may have attributed to his fussiness. I started putting a maxi pad in his diaper at night. This boy's bladder is ridiculous. I've tried every overnight diaper out there. Even wearing TWO overnight diapers on top of each other isn't enough, so I resorted to a maxi pad. It's worked the last three nights! So maybe that made him a little uncomfortable and took a little getting used to...?
