March 2014 Moms

If you did an alternative GD test, please come in...

So I failed my 1hr this morning and threw up afterwards.  I CANNOT stomach doing this again...and I have to on Thursday.  I mentioned the jellybean thing and was told that I am full of it.  If you did something (jellybeans, grape juice, etc), can you tell me EXACTLY what you did?  And if you have links to any studies, please share?  I didn't see my usual OB this morning but I will be speaking with her tomorrow and I'm somewhat upset with the way I was treated.

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.

  • I see a midwife at a birth center and I was not required to drink anything special. Just had to eat a normal meal 2 hours prior to my appointment. It was wonderful and I found out earlier today that I passed!

  • @Farmboyswife - do you have more details?  I want to be as armed as possible when I speak with my OB tomorrow.  I've even found medical documentation on the jellybean thing - and i was told no by them.  They said take the test or assume GD.

  • I took the one hour today and partially froze the drink and let it sit out for an hour. It tasted like a slushie and the texture helped me. I also had the lemon lime one so maybe the taste was better. Also as soon as my blood was taken I ate a protein bar and then another one 2 hours later. If your stuck with the drink hopefully this helps you.

  • Tell them you want the protocol for bariatric surgery patients. In my OBs office it was a 400 calorie breakfast 2 hours before a blood draw. The sample menu I followed was 2pc whole wheat toast, 2 tbsp peanut butter and 1/4 cup 1% cottage cheese, but I could have eaten any normal/balanced breakfast of about 400 cal.

If they tell you you're full of it they don't know what they're talking about - most post bypass people are physically unable to drink glucola and if they could it would make them terribly sick.
  • @ceh789 - thank you for specifics.  I have been sick all day stressing over this.

  • In my first pregnancy my OB suggested the jellybean thing after I threw up the 3 hour glucose drink. I just bought a bag of jellybeans and looked at the glucose content per serving and figured out how many jellybeans equalled the amount of glucose in the 3 hour drink. When I woke up in the morning I ate 42 jellybeans within 10 minutes then went into the office to get my blood drawn exactly 1 hour later, then continued the test as normal.

This time around, I just failed my 1 hour on Friday. I mentioned that last time the 3 hour test made me sick and my (new) doc said the alternative was testing my blood sugars at home 4 times a day for 5 days with a finger prick.

  • I ate skittles. There's no way I wouldn't throw up the drink, I almost threw up the skittles. I can't handle sugar at all this pregnancy. They basically told me I could eat or drink anything that had 50 grams of sugar in it.
  • I drank 8 oz of apple juice and half a banana. I was told if I failed the one hour I just had to double it for the 3 hour. I found out this morning that I passed the 1hr.

  • 1 hour from the time I finished to blood draw.

  • I am in care of midwives. They told me to eat a balanced breakfast two hours before the blood draw. I had a cup of coffee, toast with raspberry jelly and some scrambled eggs. They drew my blood and I got the result right then and there.

With my first pregnancy I saw a Dr. and had to do the fasting and drink at the office.

  • A bit off topic... but @FarmBoysWife do you think there is a connection between HG and GD? I just got diagnosed borderline since my numbers where not too far off in the last two hours, however I had pretty bad HG and in hospital 2xs. My body is not metabolizing food properly I'm sure.

  • With my first, I had a MW, and she had me do a specific breakfast that was basically a small glass of oj, toast, eggs for the one hour.

My midwife had me drink a 10oz bottle of Welch's grape juice.  It has 48g of carb. ETA: I fasted from midnight (with water) and had my blood drawn one hour after finishing the drink.

I'm going to be honest, these "balanced breakfast" tests are getting a serious side eye from me.  I had GD with my first pregnancy and if I had eaten a meal with a combination of carbs and protein, I would have passed no problem.  Which is fine.... if you eat balanced meals 100% of the time.  With my daughter, I couldn't eat oatmeal in the morning.  Add in 1 piece of patty sausage though, and my numbers were perfectly fine.  It's really important that your glucose test is actually a test.

Also ETA: A fasting blood draw is also effective.
