Toddlers: 24 Months+

is ice skating safe?

so i am thinking of taking my 2 year old ice skating with me and my husband. i am not very good at it but i think its fun, my husband is okay at it. dd is great at running and walking by now so i think she'd be fine. but dh is scared that it won't be safe because the last time we went i broke my arm. and he's worried about people not looking where they are going and knocking her down or something. but i think dd would absolutely love it, and obviously i wouldn't let her out of sight for a second. i know they make skates in her size, so i can't be the only one willing to take a toddler out on the ice. any thoughts?

Re: is ice skating safe?

  • Does the rink have any sort of assistance for learners? The rink near us lets the little ones (or ones who are just learning) push a plastic lawn chair around the rink. They look like little old people with walkers. I have to think the chairs also keep others from tripping over them or knocking them down.

  • We started taking DS skating last year when he was 2.  We made sure he had a hockey helmet and we both wore helmets too.  We had no issues, he loves skating.  He started on bob skates (the ones with 2 blades).  He got a bit freaked out when we put him on single blades this year, but is getting better.

  • hi there! i'm lurking from the 12-24 month board, but will be joining you guys soon :)
anyway, i'm actually an ice skating instructor, and where i teach we don't usually recommend children under 3 to get on the ice.  that doesn't mean it doesn't happen though.  I have seen many 2 year olds on the ice, and have given lessons to toddlers under three and they've done great.  as long as you and dh aren't all over the place, your lo should be fine.  and as pp said, you can ask for a coach, or someone to even assist her and see if your rink has walkers.  you guys will have a blast!
  • thank you everyone! i am going to wait a little while and show her some photos and videos of people ice skating and see if she shows interest before we try it. i want it to be fun for her and at this point i think it would be more fun for me than it is for her and that's not fair to her. after reading your comments and thinking more about it i don't think she is quite ready.
