i had my DD at Mercy (downtown) in May. I had a great experience, the nurses and staff were great and very kind and helpful. My dd was born on a Saturday afternoon and unfortunately they did not have a lactation consultant there until Monday morning. The nurses tried to help, as did the pediatrician when she saw her the next day, but i felt that all that was actually more confusing than helpful. My dd didn't latch at all while in the hospital. They do give you a pump and you can try to pump colostrum while you're there (but i didn't think that worked very well).
I saw the LC on Monday morning (Dee Dee was great) and she helped maya latch; i persoanlly continued to have problems with latching 6 weeks pp and then she/ we finally got it. i wouldn't say that it would have been easier/ faster if i had seen the LC right away. i ended up seeing a private LC (that came to my house) and that was what finally worked for us.
other than that, i liked Mercy: the nurses were very nice and helpful both before and after the baby was born. we asked our nurse to give the baby a bath the day we left, so we can see how to do it. that was helpful. bring an extra bag for taking stuff home, both for you and the baby and don't be shy about asking for stuff (diapers, wipes etc for baby; pads, witchhazel pads etc for you).
Thanks so much, that is very helpful about the LC not being there on the weekend. Im having a scheduled repeat c-section and was planning for a Friday so DH doesn't have to take as many days off but maybe I will avoid being there on the weekend.
We had a really fantastic experience at Mercy. Everyone was professional, friendly and attentive, and the private room was large and comfortable. I was there for two days/two nights, and utilized the lactation consultants the entire time. Luckily they were always on staff while I was there, and I really needed them because breastfeeding is actually pretty tricky at first, even if you've taken the class!
I did experience the same issue as the commenter above. We are not religious, but a lady snuck in right before we left to pray with us.. she was kind of tricky not really identifying herself as anything other than a 'volunteer', so we just assumed she was one of the many people on staff that will be rotating through your room. Not wanting to make an issue, we just went along with it, Mercy is a Catholic hospital after all, and it wasn't really a big deal.
I had surgery there last year and thoroughly enjoyed the staff and facility. Thanks for the additional push as I'm even more excited now to deliver at Mercy!
