BJCM in airport?

I'm flying with my 10 month old twins in a couple of months. Has anyone gate checked a double baby jogger city mini? Or similar stroller? Would you recommend a stroller bag? I'm mostly nervous about it getting damaged. We have a cheap double umbrella that would be easier to bring, but it would be great to have the bjcm with us for walks/outing. What would you do? I've also seen a $50 baby trend double jogger on CL I could buy to take, but I'm worried it would be too wide/bulky. Thank you!

Re: BJCM in airport?

  • I've taken my BJCMD on a few flights now. I don't think it's necessary to buy another stroller, esp not a bigger/bulkier one. I did buy a stroller bag for it because I don't trust the airlines. You'd probably be just fine without it. No one else seems to use one that I've seen. I'm just neurotic about stuff like that. When I bought the stroller bag I was told to take the wheels off. But I've heard recently that you don't have to. I think it's quicker to fit the stroller in the bag without the wheels but I have the older model. Maybe just practice at home, if you opt for the bag. Otherwise it'd take 2 seconds to fold it at the gate.

Oh and I just remembered on one flight when we landed a FA announced that some strollers were being sent to baggage claim. I don't remember why. Ours was one of them. I'm not sure if that happened because of the bag or in spite of it but I was glad it had a bag when I saw it on the baggage carousel.

  • I bought a use combi twin sport for traveling, has all the features I want for a good double, was $50, folded up small, and I didn't care if it got banged up. I don't think gate checked strollers get banged around as much but if you're worried a stroller bag isn't the worst investment. Might be a little bit of a pita to get it all unpacked and unfolded at the bottom of the ramp though. Good luck!

  • ETA: if you do use the stroller bag and you and spouse each have carryon luggage then just take your luggage and babies straight to the seats in the waiting area. Then one of you can go back for the stroller. Or if there's a helpful airline employee at the stroller area ask for help. Don't do what we did the first time and try to get everything together on the ramp when everyone is trying to get off the plane. Major fail.
  • Thanks! Any particular bag you'd recommend? I have the GT if that makes a difference...
  • I think any bag that fits and has a handle would be fine. We got the BJ brand one on amazon
  • Just a heads up, some airlines have weight limits on strollers you can gate check. American had a 20lb limit when I flew them about 15 months ago. I was traveling alone and had a huge fight with the ticket agent about bringing my 22 lb single stroller to the gate. There was no way I was going to carry a 2 1/2 mo old and all my stuff by myself. I have not had a problem with United or Southwest. :)
  • I'm so happy I checked this thread! I'm flying tomorrow with my bjcmd and was feeling stressed about it getting rejected at gate check for being too big. And we have to have it at the airport and for connectors! I checked with airlines but just online. It's stressful enough to fly with infant twins and then add on these restrictions....
Oh, and not doing a bag. I don't want another item to worry about. But my city mini is a used one that are pretty cheap on craigslist. Sacrificial lamb.
