Ear Infection Question...

So this is my first time dealing with ear infections.  My LO has finished his antibiotics but he is still a little congested.  Once in a while he may still grab at his ear. Just curious to see if anyone else has gone through this.  I don't know if I should ask for more antibiotics.  I'm just keeping a close eye on him and I know that I can overthink so I didn't want to rush to call the doctor again.

Also...LO started crawling today!  Yay, why did I start crying, lol.

Re: Ear Infection Question...

  • Congrats on the crawling! And he is a doll baby. Sorry, no experience with ear infections.

  • Congrats on crawling!!  Time for the fun!  We just went to the Dr on Friday for a suspected ear infection.  Lo is congested and tugging on her left ear, but, no ear infection.  So I wouldn't necessarily say he needs more meds.  Maybe wait a few days and re-assess.

I agree that he probably doesn't need anymore antibiotics if he completed a full course. Keep an eye on it and maybe call the dr in a couple of days if you suspect that it hasn't resolved or is getting worse.
    ETA: Congrats on the crawling!!!!!!

My middle guy had enough ear infections to need tubes. His ear infections usually started about a week into a cold. We would start the antibiotics and his congestion and his fussiness would clear up in about 2-3 days (likely the viral part of the illness was improving, as was the bacterial portion of the ear infection and any nasal part that was bacterial). The times that he was still congested at the end of a 10 day course of antibiotics he still had the ear infection and needed a different antibiotic. I would definitely not ask for an antibiotic over the phone at this age, I would take him in and have them look in the ears again to verify what is going on. If the first drug didn't work I would think they would take a step up and do a different one rather than just doing the same one again.
    This.

  • I'd go in and ask for them to recheck his ears. Our pedi usually has us set up a recheck appointment at the end of the antibiotic course.
