Rec your LO's clock

Does anyone have one of those clocks that lights up when your LO is allowed to get out of bed? What age do you think they can understand the idea of it?

My extreme early bird is 16mo old. She wakes between 430 and 530 most days. I'd like to teach her to play in her crib until 530 (and eventually 6am! Won't that be wonderful!) and I wonder if she's too young to introduce the idea of "get up when the lights are on." Thanks!

  • Couldn't you just get one of those timers that you plug in and then plug a night light into it?  Same thing that people use for holiday lights...

Now, as to whether your 16 month old will understand to play quietly in her crib until the light comes on, that's a whole other issue that I don't have a suggestion for.

  • I just bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/Wake-With-Night-Light-Music-Timer/dp/B0044D0HA2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387820406&sr=8-1&keywords=sleep+owl

I don't plan on introducing it for a while (maybe 18mos to 2 yrs) - but it was on sale :)

  • DS is 17 months and there is no way he would have any idea what any of it meant. I would just put a couple toys and books in the corner of the crib so that she has them available to play with when she wakes up. I think at this age, if they're going to cry when they wake up, then they're going to cry, whether or not they have a timer.
  • A 16 month old will not understand that.

  • We're going to give it a shot with our LO pretty soon, and he's almost 21 months.  I'm actually planning on ordering an "OK to Wake" clock today.  He's always been an early riser, and goes back and forth between trends of getting up at 4 - 4:30, and "sleeping in" til 5:30ish.  I feel like he might now be able to understand the concept.  At 16 months, I don't think he would have understood.  But every kid is different, and it can't hurt to give it a try!  Wishing both of us luck and a bit of extra sleep in the near future.
  • I have never even heard of this, but I'm intrigued.

    Neither have I.

  • @vamomtobe good luck! Hope it helps you. I can't believe you've survived those early wake ups so long!

I don't think my kiddo is ready to understand the whole thing but I still might try to build it into the morning routine. I know she can tell the difference when daddy goes into her room (time to sleep more) and when I do (yay, I can get up!) so I think she can come to understand that when the light goes on, we get up. Will it stop her from crying at 5am? Surely not. But it may in time

  • DS1 has an Okay to Wake clock but we didn't start using it until he was 3.5 and in a twin bed.  He was able to understand the concept right away and still uses it at 5.5.
