June 2014 Moms

placenta encapsulation

Has any 2nd time moms done this or is anyone thinking of doing this? I am very interested in it and whenever I tell someone they get grossed out by the thought I guess.

The reason I am interested in it is because with DD I had postpartum pretty bad and I have read that this can help with that and ones milk supple. I also saw that you can pay someone to do this for you which would be nice considering I don't think I will be up to messing with my placenta after birth.

Re: placenta encapsulation

  • Yes I have been reading about it too. The woman who teaches the childbirth class I signed up for does it, and some doulas around here do too. I looked in the scientific literature and there isn't very good evidence either way about preventing PPD, but almost all mammals consume the placenta....so...maybe there is something to it? Curious to hear if others know more.

  • My friend did it after her home birth. She did it for pp reasons, too. She thinks it works. The person that did it for her came to her home and did it in her kitchen.

  • @chloephoebecall that's interesting I wonder if they all do it in the persons home I don't know if i would want it done at my home or not I really need to call some places to see how the process works

  • @joules235 Did you have someone do the process for you or did you do it yourself? And if you had someone do it for you did they pick it up at the hospital or do I take it home with me and put it in my fridge?

  • @joules235
Good information I asked my Dr about it and he knew nothing and told me he could just prescribe a medication which bothered me.

  • I am a FTM and while I am delivering via doctor, I plan on having mine done. From what I have heard, it is worth every penny (I have gotten a lot of rude/grossed out comments to, I'm just not going to be voicing it to many people anymore...)
    :)
  • I have a few friends who have done this to help improve their milk supply for the second time around. None of them mentioned anything about PPD but all felt it help with the milk.

I asked my Dr about it. He said it's rumored to help but not much research has been done. However he suggested if I need help with my milk coming in that I can have 1 Guinness with dinner for the first 3 days after the birth and that seems to do the trick. He then of course said I should nurse right before and not for 2 hours after but the first few days it's the thicker stuff, not milk yet, etc. Anyway, I found it interesting and thought it was worth sharing.
  • I also had a friend do this after her last pregnancy. She suffers from PPD, and although it didn't completely relieve her of her symptoms, she did say it helped a little.
  • I'm interested in doing it. My OB highly recommends it and calls them energy happy pills.
  • Is the placenta dried and then put in capsules?
  • I had never heard of this but I found a website that told me a lot and it doesn't sound that bad atall.

@Mrs.C.V. it depends on the encapsulator. Some clean it and then boil it (with or without herbs) before dehydrating it, others go straight to dehydrating it after cleaning it. Then its ground up and dispensed into capsules to start using.
  • Ok. I did it with my son, he is my third child. I have really bad PP D with my first two daughters. I noticed it was so much better with taking the placenta capsule. I stopped taking them because I thought I was good. Then PPD kicked in, and I decided to start taking them again night and day difference. Mike doula encapsulated them for me. I will be doing it again this for this baby. They really have no taste because they are in a capsule.

  • I am interested but the hospital I am delivering at doesn't allow it. Boo!

  • I really want to learn more about it. SIL's mother is a midwife and does it, so I want to talk to her about it. I had PPD and low supply issues when DD was born, so I would really like to be preventative this time around.
