Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Trouble digesting milk?

My DD will be one on Sunday. The nurse said we could start half and half bottles of BM and WCM. Since we started that she has been very constipated and gassy. Since I can't pump as much as she drinks since I returned to work, should the WCM be stopped? Does this mean she isn't ready for it? Should she start on a toddler formula? Her one year app isn't until Thursday but if milk is hurting her I should stop.

Re: Trouble digesting milk?

  • I can only pump 2 times per day and I'm lucky if I can get 4 oz.

  • My pump was stolen out of my car when DS was about 10mo, so I was working with a limited BM stash by the time we started to transition to WCM.  We did half BM, half formula, then a splash of WCM for a whole month, slowly phasing out BM as we ran out and adding more WCM.  We was constipated for the first month or so, but he's adjusted well.

Dang. I bet that thief was very disappointed!
Right?? I bet they thought it was a laptop.  They smashed my windows TWICE in one month at work to get to it.  The first time the window didn't break, the second time, they got my pump.  And my insurance wouldn't cover theft under $1000, and the cameras in the work parking lot were dummies.  I was out the $350 for the pump and $400 to replace the window twice.

  • I think milk is a little constipating at first for many babies but it gets better over time. That's what my pedi told me. Transition slower is an option but over time their digestive system adjusts to digesting whole milk.
  • My son was the same way when I tried the WCM & FF when switching him over. Then we came to learn that he is lactose, so now he drinks Whole Lactose Milk & he has no problem digesting it. just something to think about if the WCM doesn't work for her.

  • Our LO had a milk protein allergy, so we started on rice milk and he's had no problem with it. Maybe just do a slower transition like only a couple of ounces in one bottle and if she does well with that for a few days then do a few more ounces in just one bottle and then gradually move to a second bottle and such or since you're seeing your pedi in a few days then you can just wait and see what they recommend.

Sheer curiosity here... Why didn't you think to put it in the trunk or not leave it in the car after the first window smashing?

  • OP, toddler formula might be a good transition. You could also try almond or soy milk.
