My 9 month old son just recently developed very severe diaper rash it's so bad it's bleeding.. He has had some diarrhea lately and is cutting his top teeth.. Can you recommend what diaper cream you have used and please give me pointers on how to make this less painful for him. It's so heartbreaking seeing him in so much pain when I have to wipe his little butt
Re: Severe diaper rash 9 month old
We found Desitin extra strength (make sure its the 40% zinc) works best for us.
the key with all creams is to use a tissue to completely dry the bum first, otherwise the cream traps the moisture on the rash making it worse.
If it's irritation from the constant contact with poop then you need a barrier cream (like desitin) if its yeast then canestan or monistat will help. If its fungal get a prescription from the doc.
If the open wounds are bad I will put a bit of polysporin on first then the barrier cream on top of that.

DD2 has gotten a couple of rashes and I my method is to clean her up (if you can, using a sprayer in the tub, rather than wipes, seems to be much less abrasive) and make sure she's really good and dry, then I apply the neosporin and put the paste over it (I like Burt's Bee's diaper cream). I've only had to do this a few times but it always works within about a day to clear things up.
